Obituary For Jim Thik Mah

Jim Thik Mah, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of Kwantung, China, passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at Grande Prairie at the age of 86 years.

Jim Mah was born on June 4, 1938, in rural Kwantung China. He immigrated to Edmonton, AB in 1950, when he was 12 years old. Jim was a successful business owner despite only having a grade six education. Jim married his wife Julie in 1965, and they moved to Grande Prairie to run the York Hotel restaurant. In 1979, Jim and Julie bought their first Dairy Queen and built their second Dairy Queen in 2001. All of Jim’s kids and grandkids have worked at the Dairy Queen at some point during their 39 years as DQ franchisees.

The thing that Jim loved and appreciated the most was his wife of fifty-nine years, his kids, grandkids and extended family.

Jim was born in poverty where he developed his tough, “scrappy” no-nonsense hard-working attitude. He jumped at opportunities during his life which resulted in his success in business and his ability to provide for his family.

Besides the Dairy Queens, Jim will be remembered for his love of WWE wrestling, going to the casino to play poker, slots and horse racing. As well as his love of Chinese food, especially from Vancouver. He also enjoyed travelling on cruises all over the world with family and friends.

Jim is survived by wife of fifty-nine years, Julie Mah; children: Terrance James Mah, Kevin Douglas Mah, and Tracy Dionne Mah; grandchildren: Katelyn Ashley Mah, Shalea Juel Nichols, Christopher James Mah, Meagan Elizabeth Mah and Alethia Dionne Mah.

Jim was predeceased by his mother Kim Kine Chung.

A Viewing will be held on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at 11:30 am, at Oliver’s Funeral Home (10005 107 Ave).

Funeral Services will begin at 1:00 pm following the viewing.
