Obituary For Joan Sandul
It is with profound grief and sorrow that we share the news of the passing of our beloved wife and mother, Joan Sandul. She died peacefully at the Grande Prairie Hospice on Thursday April 10, 2025, surrounded by the love of her life, her husband Bob and family.
Joan was born in Spirit River, AB, to Lillian and Aleck Anderson and was raised on the family farm in Prestville, AB, alongside her two brothers, Aleck Jr. and Doug.
She married Bob in 1959 and moved to Grande Prairie, where they raised their family of five. Joan worked as a Supervisor at AGT, overseeing the training and management of telephone operators.
In 1976, Joan and Bob moved the family to Fairview, AB to open Nordic Glass. It was in Fairview that Joan was able to truly expand her career opportunities. She opened a fashionable ladieswear store, Silvers, with two of her close friends, obtained her real estate license, and worked as a postal worker for Canada Post. She created “work families” wherever she went, forming lifelong friendships along the way.
Joan and Bob relocated back to Grande Prairie in 2008, eventually moving to Lakeview Lodge in 2019, where they lived until Joan’s passing on April 10, 2025.
We are so thankful for the incredible level of care that was provided to Joan, especially her personal physician, Dr. Darryl Bartie, and the wonderful medical teams at both the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital and Prairie Lake Hospice.
Joan was surrounded by so much love throughout her life, especially in the days leading up to the end of her journey, and for that we are eternally grateful.
Joan is survived by Bob, her husband of 65 years, and her children: Sheryl (Len), Ron (Sandy), Jack (Patty), Sharlene, and Lara (Doug). She was a proud grandmother to Tila (Dan), Kristen (Will), Lenissa (Andrew), Steven (Lyndsey), Curtis (Ashley), Jessica (Kyle), Olivia (Hans), Asia (Travis), and Tyler (Cassidy). And great grandmother to; Pepper Anne, Jeremiah, Margo, Chase, Liam, Leo, Jaxson, Sloan, Addison and Maria.
She is also survived by her sister-in-law Verle Anderson, nephew Douglas (Leanne), sister-in-law Joan Margel, as well as many other cherished family members and friends.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, Lillian and Aleck, her stepfather John Nedohin and her brothers Aleck and Douglas.
Funeral Arrangements are entrusted to Oliver’s Funeral Home. The Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at 10:30 am at Oliver’s Funeral Home (1005 107 Ave Grande Prairie).
A Livestream link for the service will be available 5 minutes prior to the service.
Luncheon and Fellowship to follow at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 54 (9912 101 Ave, Grande Prairie).

Bob and Family. A letter to Joan My Dear "Sister" Joan, Your Heavenly wings have taken you to be with family who have gone before, You have met your Lord God and all your loved ones. Now you have your forever home that He promised would be waiting just for you. I remember what a strong, resilient lady you were, working full time,, Bob away trucking, and you raised FIVE amazing children . Your example set such a high standard. Any time you and Bob attended any function, You, Bob and the children were immaculately groomed. Joan, you were always a "glam" queen. AND I could not leave out the fun times we had at the lake.. Remembering you sitting by the stone barbecue, roasting hot dogs for every kid that didn't have one yet. Rolling fresh bread dough into long ropes , winding around a willow stick and baking it over the fire, filling it with butter and jam when it was done. YUM! SO many memories I will hold in my heart. And my loving husband, your brother Al. The lake has never been the same since he left us. Rest in Peace Joan until we are together again. May God protect you and hold you safely in His arms. Blessings showered upon you always. Love , Verle

Joan Sandal: How would I describe her. -Unpretentious elegance -Unassuming of the people around her -An educator I witnessed Joan as a mom. She only wanted the best for her children and expected their best. She had the uncanny ability to see their potential and help develop that potential. The proof is seeing the diversity in her children. She saw their individuality. Joan shared that outside her family and I for one, benefited. Joan, you made a better person and will be forever in my heat and memories. For the Sandal family, I share in your grief and hope to help carry this weight. Bev Miller

My deepest condolences to the family. I remember Joan, and Bob well, as when they started Nordic Glass, it was when they bought my dad's (Mitchell Bak) paint and glass store, Superior Building Products. Joan was a lovely lady. She will be missed. She will always be with each of you in your hearts.

Joan, I am going to miss you so much. I always considered you an "adopted" Sister and a very good friend. We had so many good times together, it would be hard to choose a favorite memory, but out last get-together was an amazing time. We laughed, reminisced about times at the lake, told stories that made us laugh harder, but to leave you brought tears. Your leaving has been a trying time but knowing you are at peace makes it a little easier. Rest in Peace Joan in your new forever Home.
