Obituary For John Anderson Young Sr.

On Monday, February 18, 2019, John Anderson Young Sr. of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away peacefully at the age of 89, surrounded by the love of his children.

Born in Rosetown, SK on July 5, 1929, John farmed in the Oyen area until moving to a farm east of Wembley, with his wife Sheila, where they raised their four children on a mixed farm. He farmed grain, and raised Hereford cows, and Hamp and Suffolk sheep, often taking the aggregate sheep trophy and blanket home from the Grande Prairie County Fair. John was an avid outdoorsman, wildlife enthusiast and sportsman. He curled, played hockey, softball and slow-pitch, and made countless goose spotting expeditions as long as he could.

After retirement they moved to Qualicum Beach, twice. Each time, the draw of grandchildren brought them back to Alberta. The final move brought him back to Grande Prairie.

John is survived by his wife, Sheila; four children: Beth (Duncan) Davis, Peggy (Jeff) Martin, John (Agnes) Young Jr., and Alison (John) Laidlaw; as well as his adoring grandchildren: Seth and Jordan Davis, Adam (Megan) Woods, Alyssa Young, and Meghan, Ben, Katie, and Mackenzie Laidlaw.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2019, at 1:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.). Coffee and stories to follow.

Condolences

  • June 24, 2021

John and Sheila were good friends to our parents, Nora & Rusty Bird, when we all lived at Sibbald. The eldest daughter, Francis, babysat the last summer before the Youngs moved away from there. The Bird family wishes to offer you our deepest and most sincere condolences. Mrs. Young, you and Mr. Young, were great influences on the people we have become. Thank you for sharing your family with ours. May you and your family find comfort in your precious memories and may the tears of sorrow be replaced with many wonderful shared memories from the many people whose lives you both touched deeply. God Bless.
