Obituary For John Ivan Bogdanek

John Ivan Bogdanek, resident of Eaglesham, AB, passed away on Monday, July 1, 2024, in Spirit River, AB, at the age of 95 years.

John was born in Viceroy, SK, on October 2, 1928. In 1931 the family moved to the homestead in Codesa, AB, where John received his education. At the age of fourteen he went to work in the Buffalo Lakes area, threshing. In 1949 John leased a half section of land and began farming. He then met Helen Konashuk, and they were married on November 14, 1963. Two years later their first son, Alvin, was born and three years later their son Danny made his arrival. John raised cattle, pigs, and chickens.

He also had a variety of off-farm jobs through the years. He worked for the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration, the United Grain Growers elevator in Codesa, seismic, pipelining, and logging, however, farming was his passion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. In his later years, he spent his time crop-checking on his quad, gardening, and cutting firewood. He remained on the farm until the winter of 2022. John was known for his warm smile, kind demeanour and sense of humour. He would always take the time to talk to you.

He will be sadly missed by his sons: Alvin (Cheryl) and Danny; grandchildren: Tanya (Nick) Thibeault, Tyler and Brandon; great-grandchildren: Adalynn and Sawyer; sister-in-law Caroline; brother-in-law Nick (Helen) Konashuk, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

John was predeceased by his wife Helen; parents Nick and Sophia; and brothers Bill and Steve.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at 12:00 PM, at the Eaglesham Community Church (4905 - 51 St, Eaglesham, AB).

Service will follow at 1:00 PM and Interment will follow the service at the Fox Creek Cemetery.

Condolences

My condolences to Alvin and Danny and the family. John was a salt-of-the-earth kind of guy. He would always meet me with a smile and a handshake and ask how things were going. Always a pleasure to run into him and the boys; the acorns who didn't fall far from the tree. He will be missed.

The news of Mr Bogdanek's passing was very saddening . My heart goes out to Alvin and his family , and to Danny. It's so hard to lose someone you thought was going to be there forever, or at least that's what you realize when they're gone. So many of my childhood memories involve the Bogdanek family . Card games, games, and excellent food prepared by either Helen or my aunt . They took turns hosting . That's how we passed long winters . The description given of Johnny in this tribute is bang on. I will always remember his smile, that twinkle in his eye when he was being funny or telling a joke . His kindness , his welcoming ways, and one of the kindest men one could ever meet . RIP Mr Bogdanek , you've earned your rest . And you raised exceptional men , they'll take it from here. 🙏
