Obituary For John Markovich

The family of John Markovich is sad to announce his passing from cancer on Sunday, November 5, 2017, at age 87.

Dad was born on the farm near Rycroft, in the heart of the Peace River country, a badge he wore with pride throughout his life.

Dad is mourned by his wife of 55 years, Reita; his children Phil (Mary), Jean, Norm (Paula), and Carole; and his grandson Aidan. His loss is also felt by sister Barbara Stanich; brothers Paul (Maureen) and Nick (Ruth); sister-in-law Dorothy; and brother-in-law Paul Loroff. John will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews and their families and by Mom’s family including the Harding, Wilson, Wood and Karges families.

Dad was predeceased by his parents John and Mary; brother Tony; sisters Anne Hemmingway, Mary, Edith Barich and Matilda Loroff; sister-in-law Liz; and brothers- in-law Lester Hemmingway, Andrew Stanich and Mike Barich.

Growing up on a farm, Dad learned the value of hard work and sacrifice. He graduated with a Bachelor of Agriculture Degree from the University of Alberta. He was proud of his time there and all the people he got to know from St. Joseph’s College. After university, he worked for the Alberta Government until he took early retirement. That opened the door for his next career as a real estate agent, a vocation he deeply enjoyed.

In his later retirement, he was virtually a professional player of hockey drafts, especially the Kenaston Super Draft. Dad also loved gardening and was proud of his roses and sweet peas.

We are sad to no longer enjoy Dad’s laughter, numerous stories and regular encounters with many people he got to know over the years through the Peace Country, his work, his volunteer activities, and the neighbourhood.

We are forever grateful to the wonderful, caring, compassionate people at the Misericordia Community Hospital who made Dad’s final days comfortable.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 12:00 pm, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Rycroft, AB.

In memory of John, donations to Covenant Foundation (3C60 11111 Jasper Ave. NW,

Edmonton, AB, T5K 0L4 http://covenantfoundation.ca/) or to STARS (10911 123 St., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 7Z3, http://www.stars.ca/ab/ ) are welcome.

Our sincere condolences to the whole Markovich family on the passing of Uncle John. Although provinces separated us, stories of my mom's childhood visits with cousins in AB, our few meetings in ON and the many informative phone calls shared by my mom always made us feel close. My father George, brother Rob and his family and I keep you all in our thoughts and prayers. God Bless. Mike Sikic

Dear Reita and Family, Richard and I are so sad to hear that 'one of our own' has been very ill and passed to the Lord! We really enjoyed the meeting and company of both of you - John seemed 'like family' as my family (on Mom's side - the Smiths and Chelich's) are indirectly related. May the memories that you all hold dear, be a joy one day. We remember Len being late for his wedding, and I think? John was involved, as he was the Best Man - it was something he didn't live down for quite a while - while we had many laughs over that! We trust the Good Lord and Hail Mary are holding his hand in a very "Special Place".

Hello Jean. I am so happy to hear from you. Yes, I did realize that your dad had passed. It was certainly a shock to me. I always had the greatest respect for your dad. He was very good to me. As a matter of fact, I completed a "Memory Book" for myself after I retired. Your dad had written a glowing letter of reference for me way back when and today it sits proudly in my book. He was a very good and fair man. I enjoyed working with him very much. Trust your family is doing as best as can be at this time. I hope your mom is OK. My husband, Vern, and I send you and your family our deepest condolences. It is a very hard time when a loved one passes. I lost both my mom and dad several years ago. We all grieve differently but time does heal us. Please take care of yourselves now. Once again, thank you so much for contacting me.

I remember John with fondness.....even though it has been many years since I have worked with him. He was a very kind man and loved by all the staff at Lands and Forests.
