“Big” John Melnik, resident of Grovedale, AB, passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at the age of 75 years.

John was born in Oshawa, ON on April 19, 1942. As a young man, John left Ontario and headed west, ending up in Prince George, BC, doing what he did best – ‘a very skilled union pipefitter’. After a few years, John and Ella decided to move to Grovedale and take up homesteading while John continued working his trade.

John enjoyed sharing his stories of his earlier travels. He loved his birds, cats, flowers, and of course, attending the Auction sales. He enjoyed expressing his political views to all people near. John was a hardworking man who stood by his convictions!

John will be greatly missed by those that knew him. He is survived by his step-daughter Sandra Wagner; grandchildren: LaDonne Wagner, Ken and Jody Wagner, and Chet and Kristy Wagner; 5 great-grandchildren: Brendan, Isaac, Jada, Evan and Iyla; brothers: Tony Melnik and Stan (Marge) Melnik; sister Josephine Kozlowski; as well as many nieces and nephews.

John was predeceased by his long time partner Ella MacDonald, parents Pauline and Peter, brother Roman; and sisters Elizabeth and Leona.

A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, May 26, 2018, at 3:00pm, at Grovedale Cemetery. Luncheon to follow at Grovedale Hall.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
