Obituary For Kathleen Patricia Meyers (nee Pityn)

Kathleen Patricia Meyers, resident of Grande Prairie Care Center, formerly of Fairview, AB, passed away on Monday, September 18, 2023, at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital surgical ward, at the age of 84 years.

Kathleen was born in Vilna, AB, and grew up on a farm in a pioneer family with her parents, 2 brothers, and 8 sisters. After high school, she ventured to Edmonton, AB, was married, and had 3 children: Lorraine, Elaine, and Lennie. Sixteen years later, Kathleen moved north to Brownvale, AB, where she remarried and became a farm wife for 30 years. In retirement, she moved to Fairview, and later the Grande Prairie Care Center. She obtained a Horticulture Certificate when she was on the farm, and enjoyed growing premium flowers, winning numerous awards, and also judged baking, canning, and flowers at County Fairs.

Kathleen was outspoken, she rattled a few feathers in her day, but always meant well. Her favorite pastime was talking on the phone, which coined her the name "Chatty Kathy". She was an artist and painted numerous paintings with both watercolor and acrylic paint. Kathleen was an excellent cook and canner, and really enjoyed cooking traditional Ukrainian food. She also enjoyed traveling, and traveled to a fair number of countries.

Kathleen is survived by her son Lennie Splett; son in-law John Koch (Lorraine’s husband); granddaughters Michelle Koch and Lorrie Wearden; grandsons Michael and William Splett; 6 great-grandchildren; as well as sisters: Mary Dolynchuk, Anne Zawadiuk, Helen Weeks, Eva Nolan, Irene Zapisocki, Margaret DeBernardi, and their families.

She was predeceased by her daughters Elaine Wearden (2012), and Lorraine Koch (2020). Previous to her girls, she lost her grandson Robbie Wearden, and great-grandson Connor Paulovich. She was predeceased earlier by her parents Onufry and Patricia Pityn; first husband Lorne Splett; sisters Molly Shymkiv and Olga Osadchuk; brothers Peter and Nick Pittyn; as well as her second husband Doug Meyers.

Memorial donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation – Alberta (100-119 14 St., NW, Calgary, AB, T2N 1Z6).

Condolences

Aunt Kathy was hospitable and cooked her favourite Ukrainian meals. She became a Christian as a single mom and loved the Lord. She was a lot like grandma and liked to show off the "fine" things she acquired. My mom "Olga" loved to visit in person and on the phone with Kathy. I will miss her. Gail Schalin
