Obituary For Kelly (Hairy) Wold

On Monday, March 30, 2020, Kelly (aka Hairy) Wold passed away at the age of 58 years. His family and friends still can’t believe that a man who seemed indestructible, has left us so soon. With stubbornness and a belief in his ability to bounce back, Kelly challenged his doctors to get him home. Sadly, Kelly’s body failed him and there was nothing that science nor medicine could do - he blamed this on the doctors being Oilers fans.

Kelly would say that he was proudest of two things in his life: the first was winning the heart of his cherished wife Rosie (Rose-Ann). Even after 39 years he was still in disbelief that a woman so smart, kind and beautiful would ever consider sharing a life with him.

Kelly’s second joy was his son Terrance. To his dying day, he sat in awe of the young man that he nurtured and loved so dearly. Kelly was so proud of how gifted Terrance was at sports, and he could not believe that he had produced (with significant help from Rosie), a person so exceptional, handsome, smart, and most importantly, humble and kind.

Kelly called Rosie his wing-woman and Terrance his Stanley Cup. Kelly believed that the best thing about him was that he was Rosie’s husband and Terrance’s dad.

Known as “Hairy” to his friends, colleagues and clients, he was a man who built consensus and trust, a man of great integrity. Hairy was so respected in the oilfield seismic and reclamation business that they named a road after him, but he was too humble to ever boast about this.

Kelly was a strong, powerful Viking with at heart of gold. A grizzly bear with the gentleness of a lamb. A man who would give the plaid shirt off his back to help a friend. A kind soul who could be hurt deeply but forgave easily. For many of us, we know how wonderful it is to be loved, but profound to be understood. For Kelly, if you understood him you could only but love him.

Kelly was predeceased by his father Gordon, and sister Shelly, father-in-law Joe, and his beloved dogs Chewy and Sable. We believe that all these treasured beings await Kelly in a better place - one with less snow and where the Calgary Flames win every Stanley Cup.

Kelly is survived by his wife of 28 years and the love of his life for 39 years, his precious Rosie. He will be forever missed by his biggest fan, his son Terrance. Kelly also leaves two fur babies Rudy and Lucy to find their own treats.

Kelly will be missed by his large extended family, his strong, protective mother Marina, step-father and friend Les, brother and best friend Kris, sister Tracy, step-brother Darren, a gold medal team of nieces, nephews and recently on the podium, a great-nephew. More than just in-laws, the Menzes family: mother-in-law Dolores, siblings-in-law Peter and Wayne, Diane and Wayne Earl, Paula and Rod Hamilton. All will forever feel a void in their hearts that only Kelly could fill.

Kelly also leaves behind a circle of friends that were his lifelong brothers by another mother. He will be remembered as a loyal and trusted friend who loved a good joke and took pleasure in teasing and being teased.

Kelly would want us to thank his medical team at QEII Hospital for their patience and tender care. We are grateful to the 3 North nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, social worker, and above all, the compassionate care of Dr. Alexandra Noga, who for over 25 years, never gave up on Kelly.

In lieu of flowers, Kelly would want you to consider donating to the Grande Prairie Hospital Foundation in his memory. He would also want us all to remain safe and healthy during these uncertain times, so we will gather in the summer to hold a Celebration of Life…stay tuned.

Until then, reach out to a friend, take a moment to share a memory, or simply raise a glass to Kelly (Hairy).
