Obituary For Ken Wong
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ken Wong. A long-standing resident of Grande Prairie, AB, he passed away with family by his side at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at the age of 71 years.
Ken was born on November 22, 1950, in Guangzhou, China, where he spent the first years of his life before immigrating to Canada with his mother Bow and father Wing. On April 20, 1957, they left Hong Kong and embarked on a new journey to Canada where they settled in Grande Prairie, AB. Ken attended Montrose Elementary School, Montrose Junior High, and the Grande Prairie Composite High School. He was a part of the graduating class of 1967. During his younger years, he enjoyed playing hockey and other sports while working at Safeway. After graduation, Ken moved to Edmonton, AB where he continued to work at Safeway while attending NAIT which he graduated from in 1970. In 1972, he moved to Vancouver, BC where he continued to work at Safeway as well as BC Tel. During his time in Vancouver, he discovered a passion for music which led him to pursue his hobby of being a DJ. Two of the most memorable trips he took were the road trip to California and Vegas in 1977 and travelling to South-East Asia in 1978. After exploring the world, he moved back to Grande Prairie where he began working at the Golden Inn, the hotel built by his father, Wing and three partners. There he took on the role of manager. Later he began working at the Golden Star as a server. In 1999, he became the manager at the Golden Star. He proudly held that position until his passing, in addition to running his rental properties.
Ken was a man with a heart of gold filled full of kindness and warmth and held genuine care for everyone he encountered. He took pride in everything he did and always did it with a smile on his face, even if the process wasn’t always pleasing. He was an individual who went above and beyond for all customers whom he encountered during his years at the Golden Star whether it was your first time seeing him at the front for a take-out, or if it was your fiftieth time visiting, he always made an effort to stop and chat mid-meal. Ken put his heart and soul into the restaurant, and you could tell the dedication he had towards the establishment as he always ensured that all customers left happy.
The main hobby that Ken had was working, as it was something he enjoyed and was beyond passionate about. However, in his spare time, he enjoyed watching sports, had a deep interest in antique cars and collecting them, enjoyed learning about and engaging in investments, and enjoyed watching cooking shows and visiting the restaurants he saw on TV or attempting to create the recipes himself. Ken very much enjoyed travelling with his wife Meta and daughter Kina. California was their favourite destination. Ken had ambitions and plans of travelling across the globe and doing more hobbies during his retirement days which were near approaching. He had decided to retire once “his girl”, Kina, had graduated university which occurred on December 14, 2021.
Ken will be deeply missed by his wife Meta, daughter Kina (Ryan), stepdaughter Phyllis (Matt), granddaughter Malin, mother: Bow, sisters: Carrie (Daniel) and Jean, brother Tom, niece Jennifer (Alvin), nephew Aaron, great-niece Makara, great-nephew Kristopher, aunt Evelyn, as well as many cousins and numerous friends.
Ken was predeceased by his father Wing Wong, uncle Jack Wong, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
A Public Viewing will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2021, from 6:00pm – 8:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave).
The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at 2:00pm at Clarkson Hall located in Evergreen Park (55051 Township Rd 710). The Restriction Exemption Program will be in place for the service. A livestream will be available 10 minutes before the service time on Ken’s obituary page on Oliver’s website.
Interment to follow at the Grande Prairie Cemetery (84th Ave and 112th St).
The family of Ken would like to express their extensive gratitude to Dr. Pope and all of the medical professionals and staff at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital and Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Intensive Care Unit, in addition to the numerous friends and family for their endless amounts of love, support and condolences during this difficult time.
Memorial donations may be made to the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation (10409 98 St., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 2E8) or the Canadian Cancer Society (200, 325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, AB, T2E 2P5).

Ken was a real friend. He introduced me to Chinese food at the age of 12, when he took me to the old Golden Star and made fried rice in a wok which I had never seen before. We lost contact after high school but reconnected after our first high school reunion. When I was visiting my my Mom, Ken never failed to pick me up from the airport, take me to his restaurant for lunch because he knew I hadn't eaten on the flight and would take me back to the airport on my return. Ken had an opinion on everything and loved to share those opinions. I sadly miss our conversations, laughs and our 'golden' friendship.

Both my Mother and I had the pleasure of working with Ken when we were all working for Safeway in GP back in the late 60's and early 70's. It did not matter if you knew Ken for 10 minutes or 10 years, he always treated everyone with the utmost respect and always left an indelible impression with anyone he came into contact with. My heartfelt condolences to the entire Wong family, the world has lost a wonderful human being and an all around good guy and I will miss his everlasting friendship. Rest in Peace my Friend Leroy Bangen

Good guy. Pretty good defenceman too, at least at the Pee Wee level. Always seemed to have a smile on his face, even as a teenager, which is when I knew him. Gone too soon. Condolences to the family.

Deepest condolences to Meta, Kina and the Wong family. Ken was a warm, kind, wonderful man who loved his family and friends unconditionally. Loved visis with Ken during our many wonderful meals at the Golden Star. My wedding reception was held at the Golden Star in 1973 as well as many birthday celebrations and my children's graduation dinners. Ken was always so gracious and took the time to visit. I remember him saying on many occasions "I better let you eat, your foods getting cold" and then we'd talk a bit more. RIP in peace buddy and know you will be missed!

I met Ken and his brother Tom as a teenager. I immediately gravitated tp Ken as his knowledge of the new disco trend of music was the best I had met in Grande Prairie. Since I had just started as a radio DJ in the mid 70's. It was a natural fit to join up with Ken. He had purchased one of the very first DJ mixers and Commercial Bose 800 speakers specially suited for mobile dances. As ken was older than me he proceeded to line up halls and bars for functions to get all the young people who he knew through his connections at the Golden Star restaurant. And so it began, our partnership, He would connect me with wedding dances and private parties. Ken would make a little bit for his organization of the events but it really was about his joy for getting all the people together. Keeping in mind back then at that time there was not even a full DJ nightclub in Grande Prairie. Still only country bands at bars only once in a while. This was a chance for Ken and I to give the young people a little taste of Studio 54 in GP! I somehow was able to work at these places even though at the beginning I was under legal age! Over time Ken focused on events curtailed for just the Golden Star Banquet Room and the New Golden Inn which I was able to set up the first real disco in called NightLife. Never lost connection with Ken as we still shared all the club mixes that we could get our hands on that were popular at Studio 54. The new years eve gala at the Golden Star hat we set up was an amazing memory! Sound system and light show the best we could on no budget. However every ticket was always sold and the money and tips were flowing that night! The first real GP Oil Boom had arrived! It was evident at the event in which we rang in New years 1980 with the biggest dance hit of the day, Celebration by Kool & The Gang. I hosted the event and Ken worked his tail off to organize the serving staff and the kitchen to deliver an amazing event. With Ken gone now way too soon it seems we have lost a huge part of GP's history. The Chinese community accepted me as one of their own. Totally respected me with honor and always told me I was the best DJ they knew. So happy that Ken got his family and a great wife later that some of us as he frankly would not stop working to relax and look up. Today we honour and remember Ken for his service and friendship with all his customers and friends. He will always have a special place in my heart Until next time Ken, when you and I will be spinning discs again and filling the dance floor! Darryl Olsen

I first met Ken in 1971 when we were studying electronics at NAIT; we soon became fast friends, and would spend late nights at the Ly-Chee Gardens, long weekends traveling from Edmonton to Grande Prairie, and working on his amazing cars any time we could. I remember his 1969 427 COPO Camaro, that required constant adjustment of the mechanical tappets and ate starters with alarming frequency. But he could only afford retread tires that were laughably useless if there was even a dusting of snow on the ground. Alas, our extracurricular activities negatively impacted our studies, so we were obliged to start over again in the fall of 1972. Oh well. But Ken was an amazing guy, and always seemed to squeeze 25 hours out of every day. He eventually returned to Grande Prairie where he invested shrewdly in real estate, and rented these homes to people that would otherwise be considered "sub-prime" leasers. But Ken's generosity always showed through, and he treated everyone with dignity and consideration, and would hire less advantaged folks to help maintain his stable of properties. When he was manager of the Golden Star, he would treat his staff to Disneyland trips that he paid for with points collected on credit card purchases. If someone came to the door of the restaurant begging, he wouldn't give them money, but he would feed them instead. He was never religious, but he was the most humanitarian individual I have ever met. "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me". That was Ken. I always thought that Ken would be around forever, he was that kind of guy. But now, suddenly, he's gone, and I will never share stories with him, never buy him another Tim's coffee, never feast with him at the Sai Woo again, and it has hit me like a ton of bricks. I am inconsolably saddened. Farewell, good and faithful servant. Your work here is done, and you will be greatly missed. Meta & Kina, my deepest and most sincere condolences. But I truly believe our lives were made much richer because we were lucky enough to have known him.

It was with great sadness that I heard of Ken's passing. We were friends from childhood on and especially renewed our friendship around our class high school reunions. Ken was welcoming to everyone and was a wise person. He had his quirky sense of humour which made him even more loveable. When he solved a decades old mystery of the disappearance of my grandmothers gas engine from her washing machine in our early youth it brought great laughter from everyone at the table including the other culprit Brian. When visiting Grande Prairie I looked forward to seeing him in his real element, the Golden Star, saying to him "Ken can you make me supper?" Meta and Kina my heart felt condolences at your loss. He loved you dearly and spoke of his family with such great pride. Greg Watson

Visiting Ken and the Golden Star have been part of my routine for so long they feel like old Friends. I spoke with Ken recently and he mentioned retirement and I laughed and told him he can't quit as I relied on his weather forecasts. He will be missed by the greater community of Grande Prairie of which he has been such an important part of all these years. My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

Our sincere condolences to Ken's family. My brother Sheldon used to have Ken come stay on the farm a lot of weekends where they did topical boy stuff of riding calves and horses. Mom would make Kens favourite dish of macaroni and cheese. All through the years of going for Chinese suppers at the Golden Star, Kenny would see mom and come over to visit and say to her.,Mrs Hotte you make the best macaroni and cheese. It was always a pleasure to see and visit him. Hold on to all the memories. Hugs to all his family. 🤗❤️⭐️

Our condolences to the entire Wong family in the untimely passing of Ken. I have had the opportunity to know Ken for many years and he was a fantastic man and a good friend. Although I left GP in 1993, every time we were back in town to visit family, we had to have Golden Star and a visit with zen to get caught up on what was going on in GP, the restaurant, friends and most importantly his family. His smile was infectious, his laughter was spell bounding and his friendship was everlasting. Our sympathy goes to the immediate family and the family of the employees at the Golden Star on the loss of this great man.
