Obituary For Laura Priscilla Hagen

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Laura Priscilla Hagen on Sunday, September 6, 2020, at the age of 79 years.

Laura was born July 26, 1941 in Wembley, AB. The family moved to Beaverlodge, AB in 1953. She was raised there and graduated High School in 1959. She then attended PRBI where she received a diploma in Bible and Missionary Training.

In 1961, Laura went to the Eureka River area to work the summer for Canadian Sunday School Missions. There she met Floyd Hagen and they were married September 28, 1962. They resided in Grande Prairie, where their first child was born, then relocated back to the Eureka River area, where the remaining four children were born.

In 1976, the family moved to Grovedale, AB where they took over the church and she taught Sunday school at Grovedale Baptist Church. She took on various endeavors including bus driving, sewing, custodian at Grovedale Hall, babysitting grandchildren and neighbor children, and keeping very busy with her gardening and canning. They sold the farm and moved into Grande Prairie in 1997, where she kept busy with sewing, gardening, crafts, and painting. She also took up quading/skidooing, taking many trips and enjoying the outdoors with her brother Eric and his wife Phyllis. She also enjoyed trips with various relatives and friends and being involved with all aspects of her grandchildren’s lives.

Due to medical needs, she moved into Wild Rose manor in 2009 followed by Grande Prairie Care Centre in 2019, where she passed away very peacefully.

Left to remember her life are her children: Marilyn (Jim), Ken, Calvin (Deanna), and Karen (Gil); grandchildren: Travis, Courtney (Will), Tara (Jon), Jodi, Russell (Makayla), Jaylene, Ryan, Conner, Justin, Brendin, and Breanne; great-grandchildren: Theo, Bridgette, Jaxxtyn and Lincoln; brother Ben (June); sister Phyllis (John); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Floyd Hagen; son Melvin Hagen; parents Cornelius and Anna Toews; and siblings Vern Toews, Eric Toews, and Trudy Toews.

The family would like to express our deepest gratitude for the care and support she received while in the care of Wild Rose Manor and Grande Prairie Care Centre.

I learned of Laura's passing from Byron. Even after all these years he still refers to her as "Mrs. Hagen." She is the only babysitter he ever fired and had to rehire on his own. Laura treated us like part of her family, always welcome in her home. She would sew a dress for Robin and Robin's Barbie in an afternoon. I came to pick up the kids one day and asked who the little Mennonite girl was in the garden. It was Robin in her new dress and an apron on. Even though I will not be there in person to say goodbye, I will be there in my heart. We will always have great memories of Laura and her family. -Laura McCullough

I will always remember Mrs. Hagen as a kind dear lady with a big heart, who always opened her home to others whether for Bible studies or for someone who needed a place to stay. I was that someone who needed a place to stay at one time. I will remember her kind hospitality and her willingness to listen. She was very patient, to say the least. Mrs. Hagen is with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ now where her faith has become sight. Iâ??m sure she heard the words, â??Well done good and faithful servant.â?? May her family draw closer to the Lord during these difficult times.

I wish I could have joined you for your mom's memorial yesterday but being able to watch it was nice as well. Your mom is etched in my memory as practical woman and as one that had that kind of voice you listened to :). She compiled a cookbook for me for my wedding shower which I use often even today and aprons that my kids use. Gifts that keep on giving. I am thankful to have known her and to have been a small part of your family growing up. The Hagen name is spoken of with fond and funny memories. My condolences to all of you and your families. God bless you all.
