Obituary For Laurence Johns

Laurence Leslie Johns was born in Peace River Alberta on July 24, 1937 and passed away December 30 2015, at the Grande Prairie Care Centre, at the age of 78.

Laurence was raised in the Clear Hills District (north and west of Grimshaw), he attended Hazel, a one room school grades one to 8, which was about 2 and a half miles from home. When he was old enough he would walk to the school early enough to stoke up the air tight heater having the school warm for when the teacher and students got there. He took most of grade 9 by correspondence, and then grade 10 to 12 at PRBI in Sexsmith AB. He attended Forestry training school in Hinton twice in order to become a Forest officer and again for Forest Technician. Laurence worked with the Albert Forest Service from 1959 to 1972 and again 1982 to 1988. From 1973 to 1982 Laurence worked at Canfor (North Canadian Forest Industry) GP. Laurence loved the bush, whether it was working, hunting or trapping within it.

Laurence started to curl after moving to GP in 1964. He loved the game and curled many years with his brother Stan, his dad Paul and brother in law Erwin until Erwin moved to Edmonton. Laurence was also very much involved in Horseshoe Pitching, taking on a leadership role in the early 1970’s. He is a Hall of Fame member in both the Alberta Horseshoe Pitchers Association and Horseshoe Canada Hall Of Fame (1992).

Laurence and Margaret Wiggs were married November 16, 1962, in Dixonville AB, this loving relationship lasted 53 wonderful years, right to the moment he left us to spend eternity with his Mother, Father and brother. Stan, Jack and Cam, have their 4th for crib and sweetie has a lap to curl up on.

Laurence is survived by his loving wife Margaret and their daughters, Barbara (Charles) Filewych their two daughters Katie and Madeline of West Vancouver BC, and Lorraine of Grande Prairie. Laurence is also survived by siblings, Diane (Erwin) Sieker of Edmonton, Linda (Ray) Hart of Swan River Manitoba, Wayne Johns (Allison) of Calgary and Gloria (Jim) McCallister of Grande Prairie, along with many nieces and nephews.

Laurence was predeceased by his father Paul Johns 1989; mother Helen Johns 2006, brother Stanley Johns 2007.
