Obituary For Leon Andrew Maksymchuk

Leon Andrew Maksymchuk, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of Vernon, BC, passed away on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at the age of 59 years. Leon was born in Swan River, MB, on February 25, 1962. As a young child, he spent many years in the backseat of his family’s car as they travelled around listening to his father preach the Good Word. As he got older, he worked with his older brother Larry in home construction. He met the love of his life Laurissa in Vernon and they got married in 1985. They moved to Ontario where they had their first daughter. Not long after that, they moved back to Vernon where they had two more daughters and their son. Leon established construction companies in Vernon, and later planted his family roots in Grande Prairie for 26 years where his widely known home building company, Eagle Built Homes, was started. Although he has built many things with his own hands, his pride and joy was his log cabin. Inside, he loved celebrating big events like Christmas, or simply relaxing by the log stove with good food and good company. Leon was generous, kind, hilarious, gentle, humble, creative, protective, and faithful. He always found “the best” spot, “the best” food, and “the best” place. He loved appreciating God’s natural creations, especially with family and close friends. He loved to go fishing, hunting, trapping, boating, gardening, walking in the bush, travelling, spending time in his cabin, tinkering in his shop, and motor biking. He always had time to stop and appreciate the details, especially in his immaculate wood working skills. From wooden jewelry boxes, to his hand crafted boat, to family homes and mansions.

He loved sharing everything and anything. He especially loved to share his hand made sausages and famous potato pancakes. He loved spending time with his family, playing with his grandkids, and being with his son. Leon will be sadly missed by his wife Laurissa Maksymchuk; children: Natasha (Andrew) Barr, Kaitlynn (Jesse) Robinson, Olivia (Alexander) Martinez, and Alexander Maksymchuk; as well as grandchildren: Declan Barr, Marcus Barr, Layla Barr, Jenna Robinson, Anya Robinson, and baby Martinez due in February of 2022. Also his brother Terry (Kelly) Maksymchuk, sister Valerie Powell, and sister Debby Marshall. He was a widely known man with involvement in many communities and will be dearly missed by family, friends, and colleagues. Leon was predeceased by his parents Victor and Olga Maksymchuk; brother Larry Maksymchuk; as well as niece Sarah Maksymchuk. A Viewing will be held on Thursday, October 28, 2021, from 6:00-9:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.). A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 29, 2021, at 1:00pm, at the Christian Fellowship Assembly in Grande Prairie (11449 93 St.). Interment to follow at the Grande Prairie Cemetery (84th Ave. and 112th St.).

A link will be available 15 minutes prior to the service on Leon’s obituary on Oliver’s Funeral Home website.

Laurissa and Family, Our sincere condolences, if it wasn't for Leon and the Eagle Built Home crew we wouldn't be where we are today. Thank you for taking that "chance" on Jeremy. It came full circle when Leon joined Jeremy's crew for a demo project. It was a shock to hear that Leon passed, we lift your family up in prayer. Our loved ones don't ever leave us, they remain in our hearts until we reunite in heaven. With Love, Veronica, Jeremy, Ethan & Austin Dougherty

Wishing you comfort and peace to face the days ahead and loving memories to hold in your heart! Leon may be gone but he will always be close in our hearts. So tragic to have lost my cousin at such an early age, but God's ways are higher than ours and He knew best. I have so many fond memories and laughter with Leon that will carry me on. He was a gentle, lovable soul with a funny sense of humor, sometimes dry but he made you laugh. He was generous, loving, caring and loved his family so very very much and spoke highly of all his children. He was a remarkable carpenter and learned alot from his brother Larry. He loved to travel and hunt and was the best grill cook I know. May you rest in peace in the loving arms of your Saviour and know that we all were blessed to have had you this long in our lives.

Leon was one of the nicest people we ever knew. Please accept our deepest sympathy ....

  • October 26, 2021

To Laurissa and family, my deepest sympathies on this horrible loss. Leon was a fantastic human a lot of fun to be around and had the silliest sense of humour. We had a lot of laughs, along with the crew, at Chelsea Villas project. He was stubborn (as Im sure you know) bit he was dedicated to his family and especially his grandbabies. We would occasionally have a coffee and a chat and that is what made him smile. I hadn't seen him in along time, but was thinking about him yesterday. Dave and I are thinking of you and send you all our strength and love.
