Obituary For Leonard Merlin Viken
Leonard Merlin Viken, resident of Hythe, AB, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2020, at the family homestead, at the age of 72 years.
Leonard was born on June 21, 1948, in Beaverlodge, AB to Merlin and Irene Viken. He was raised on the family farm with his three younger siblings and his grandfather, Jonah Viken. He attended Royal Banner, Valhalla Centre, and Hythe school before embracing farming, construction and a variety of roles in the oil and gas industry. He was industrious and keen on business. His two greatest accomplishments were his daughters, Jody and Tracy.
Leonard was well-known in his community and he loved to socialize. Neighbors, friends and family could always count on Leonard for a visit, whether it was at the local gas station, over the phone, or across the table over a cup of coffee. He had a big heart and was known for his generosity and gift-giving. He enjoyed buying gifts for children in the family and mischievously giving out candy. He enjoyed the outdoors, and loved animals and farm life. Leonard had strength and worked continuously to overcome personal adversity.
He will be sadly missed by his two children: Jody (Clint) Sipe and Tracy (Keith Wright) Viken; two grandchildren: Emma and Mason Sipe; surviving siblings: Dennis (Patricia) Viken, and Daylene (Tim) Dalgleigh; sister in-law Joyce Viken; uncles: Lawrence (Gunda) Napen and Robert (Carlette) Johnson; as well as nieces, nephews, and many extended family members.
Leonard was predeceased by his parents Merlin and Irene Viken, and brother Larry Viken.
A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, September 4, 2020 at 11:00am at the Valhalla Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome to attend. We kindly ask that current health recommendations are followed, including appropriate social distancing.
Memorial donations may be made to the Bethany Banner Historical Society (Box 411, Hythe, AB, T0H 2C0).
