Obituary For Lois Estella Scribner

Lois Scribner, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away from a broken heart on Saturday, December 4, 2021, at the Grande Prairie Care Centre, at the age of 85 years.

Lois was born at the family home in Wellington, ON, on December 17, 1935. She was a bright student who skipped a grade, graduating from high school early. She went to Peterborough Teachers’ College on a scholarship and was a teacher by age 17. In her mid-20’s Lois and a girlfriend moved to Whitehorse, YT, where she met and married Lyle. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2020. In 1963, they moved to Beaverlodge, AB, for Lyle’s job, and then to Wembley, AB, later that year. Lois then started work as Grade 4 Teacher at Wembley School. She taught full-time for several years before “retiring” in 1972, to become a full-time mom and occasional substitute.

Lyle and Lois raised their family in Wembley and moved to Grande Prairie in 1991. Lois and Lyle were proud to be a long-standing member of the Order of the Eastern Star since 1973. Lois was exceptional at her memory work and was recognized by being appointed as Grand Martha for Alberta in 2003. Lois enjoyed playing cards, completing crossword and sudoku puzzles, reading, watching sports and especially listening to music. After Lyle retired, their days were filled with going for coffee, travelling to card tournaments and Eastern Star meetings together. Lois also loved travelling to live concerts and sporting events with her children.

Lois will be sadly missed by her children: Elizabeth (Brad) Jones, Karen Scribner, and Glenn Scribner; grandchildren Brandon Jones (Kim), and Christine Jones (Shawn); as well as 4 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her loving husband Lyle, who passed away on October 2, 2021. We are thankful that they are both at peace and together again.

The family thanks the nurses and staff at the Grande Prairie Care Centre for the exceptional care Mom received. More than anything, we appreciate your efforts to find a way for Dad and Mom to spend their last months together.

An invitation-only Memorial Service will be held Monday, December 13, 2021, at 1:00 pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.).

A Livestream of the service will be accessible 15 minutes prior to the service on Lois’ obituary on Oliver’s Funeral Home website.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wembley United Church (P.O. Box 534, Wembley, AB, T0H 3S0), or to a charity of your choice.

Liz and Karen (and families) - I was saddened to hear of your Mom's passing. She was a kind and gentle soul. And to have lost your Dad in October as well. They will be missed. I always remember the garage door being open at the end of the street and your Dad walking to get the mail. And them driving for coffee - usually once or twice a day. May your memories bring you comfort in the days ahead. Take good care.

To Elizabeth, Karen, and Glenn: I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to you over the loss of your beautiful mother. She was always such a kind, quiet, and gentle individual. She was a compassionate mother and very proud of all her children. It is difficult to believe that she is no longer with us. Another good soul has left us. Your parents complimented each other with their different personalities, but now they are together once again. I am so sorry for your loss and especially so when you lost two parents so close together. Charlene Eckstrom

Karen, Elizabeth and Glenn. I was so sad to hear of Lois's passing especially so close to Lyle's death. She was my favourite grade four teacher and I loved every minute of time I spent in her class. She was always Mrs. Scribner to me and when I joined Eastern Star and she told me to call her Lois, she gently but firmly said it is Ok to call me Lois, which I eventually did. I always admired how wonderfully she knew and recited her memory work. I would watch and appreciate how much care and commitment she put into Eastern Star. She was such a special lady and respected and loved by so many. Please take care all her family.
