Obituary For Lucy Olga Gapa Hryb
It is with great sadness that the family of Lucy Olga Hryb, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, announces her passing after a brief illness, on Sunday, May 2, 2021, at the QEII Hospital at the age of 89 years.
On April 22, 1932, Lucy Olga Gapa was born. The second child to Michael and Katherine Gapa and the younger sister to Mary Ann Gapa (Wachna). Her parents, aunts, and uncles raised the girls to work hard and honour their Ukrainian heritage and traditions.
Lucy’s first job was as a medical clerk at Herny Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. In 1956, she married Michael Hryb whom she had met at a relative's wedding. At the time, Michael was training to become an RCMP officer. The newlyweds ventured west to Alberta where they were stationed in small towns like St. Paul, Derwent, and Crossfield, followed by the big city of Calgary. The Hryb family finally settled in the northern city of Grande Prarie in 1969.
They were blessed with four children along the way: Ann Marie, Catherine, Christine, and Michael. Lucy devoted her time and endless energy to her kids, encouraging each “to do what you love and take pride in all you do.” She adored her four-legged friends: Skip, Chiclett, PD, Pepper, and Smokey.
Lucy loved, loved, loved movies, especially the classics she grew up with. Musicals, adventure, and romance were among her favourites. She had a lifelong passion for gardening and the culinary arts. She became Martha Stewart’s biggest fan. She was a person for whom the glass was always half full. She was always interested in what you were doing and excited to share. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Lucy will be lovingly remembered by her children Catherine, Christine, and Michael, sister Mary Ann Wachna, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Lucy was predeceased by her mother Katherine Gapa and father Michael Gapa, husband of 59 years Michael Hryb, and daughter Ann Marie.
A Viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, from 9:00am – 11:00am, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.). The Celebration of Life will follow at 11:00am. Interment will follow at the Grande Prairie Cemetery (84th Ave. and 112th St.).
A Livestream will be available 5 minutes prior to the Celebration of Life, on Lucy’s obituary on Oliver’s website.
Memorial Donations in memory of Lucy may be made to a charity of your choice.

Dear Catherine, Christine and Michael, I send sincere and heartfelt condolences to all of you on the sudden passing of your mother. She was a very generous and warm person and the service today was a very nice tribute to her. The speeches were enlightening on her love of family and we will all miss her. I do not recall any year in not receiving a Christmas Card from her and we always cherished them each year. I also enjoyed the Video Tribute with the many pictures of vacations that our families shared together. Lucy and all of you will always be in our hearts. Forever remembered. Vichnaya Pamyat.
