Obituary For Lynne Alice Ness-Nelson

Lynne Alice Ness-Nelson, born Vigdis Elden, passed away at the age of 76 on September 14th, 2024, surrounded by family and loved ones. Vigdis was born on September 16th ,1947 in Norway, daughter of MÃ¥lfrid and Erling Elden, and she was brought to Canada when she was only three years old. She was raised as Lynne Alice Ness in the small town of Castor, Alberta, where she loved skating down the frozen creek each winter.

Lynne was known by all for her excellent cooking skills, and the warmth of her welcome. Anyone happening by Lynne’s house, at any time in her life, knew they would be greeted with food, candles, music and a safe sanctuary. In her professional life, Lynne was an accomplished journalist, editor, and communications specialist who seemed to know every word in the English language. Lynne was passionate about sharing meaningful stories and she was so proud of her long career at Grande Prairie Regional College.

Lynne is predeceased by her husband Jim Nelson. Together, Lynne and Jim raised three children in Grande Prairie. Their backyard was known to many as a place of merriment and many gatherings were held there over many years. Lynne always made sure there was plenty of food and drink for all, no matter how big the crowd or how bare the cupboards, and Syttende Mai parties will now forever be held in her honour.

In her retirement years, Lynne delighted in raising her dog Duke, watching sunsets over the pond, and spending time with her grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by everyone who met her, and especially her family: Son Cec, daughter-in-law Kelly, and grandsons Jameson, Cyrus, Kade, and Zach; Son Elden, daughter-in-law Steph, and granddaughters Logan and Charlie; and daughter Christina, son-in-law Matt, and grandsons Espen and Torbjørn. Lynne will be sadly missed by all of her Canadian in-laws who she became so close with over the years: Don and Sharon Nelson, and family, and Marianne and Glenn Nelson, and family. Vigdis Elden will be sadly missed by all of her Norwegian family: sisters Julie-Brit, Randi, Inger-Margrethe, and brother Eiliv, and all of their children and grandchildren. Vigdis was predeceased by her eldest sister, Gudny, who she shared a special relationship with, and we know that mom has reunited with those gone before her.

The memorial will be held on September 29th at 2:00 PM at the KMSC Law Performing Arts Theatre, at 300 Arbour Hills Blvd, Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Lynne was an Honor to Grande Prairie. My heart truly grieves that she has died. My first memory of Lynne was of course at a party, and became friends. We went on to become involved with theatre! Mememorably we marched from second street theatre to the legion where I think Jim's father married them, a long string of actors, carpenters, painters followed the parade! They have 3 exceptional children with an ever growing number of grandchildren, the dynasty continues. Lynne's career continued thro' the cbc, various more modest productions about the city, promos for productions and of course the Stompede of with which her husband was involved. She edited and typed Jim's many manuscripts. Eventually at the GPRC where she embedded herself. Inlater years Lynne became a regular visitor to the weekly held bridge bunker ever winter Thursday, much chat, gossip, food and some bridge was enjoyed. Lynne was a friend whom I will never be able to forget, I will never want to forget. As Lynne said in her very last missive to me 'see you on the other side...'

My condolences on the passing of Lynne. I was lucky enough to get to know her and Jim while doing summer children's theatre at the GPRC. Wonderful person and a true loss.

End of an era for me. I met Lynne on my first day of work at GPRC in 2006, she was a mentor, friend, over the years we shared recipes, book and movie suggestions. Stories about her grand children and my nieces and nephews. After her retirement brief relocations for both of us took place but we always stayed in touch. We both returned to the peace region (god's country 😆) and continued to enjoy coffee visits. 55a reopened !! I have so many memories of Lynne, her guidance through some tough times. Her encouragement at work and her support of my ideas and most recently quilting endeavours. Enjoying live music at GPLT, meeting up in Beaverlodge and at the grande prairie art gallery to enjoy exhibits. Many people think that Grande Prairie and area is nothing but oil, pick up trucks - it's more than that. It's a rich tapestry of history, culture, and people are what make it all happen. Meeting Lynne enriched my life on so many levels - she was my friend and I am devastated. I will miss her, but never forget her. Pleas Lynne don't edit this 😘 Megan

Careers and places can give us accomplishment and success. But some people we meet along the way are the grace of life. Lynne was one those people. Always warmhearted and welcoming, I still remember vividly her first backyard party invitation, and the pleasure of that evening. I have thought of Lynne often since hearing she is no longer with us. Among my best memories of Grande Prairie, are the times we spent together. Alan Segal

I was lucky enough to call Lynne a friend. We were both part of a long running book club that we all called the best book club of all times. We all have memories of what a smart, interesting, kind, warm and fun person Lynne was, with all of us having a connection and bond that will be with us forever. Book club night at Lynnes house was always such a warm, cozy night, delicious food, thoughtful conversations and never ending laughs. Her character was of honesty, trustworthiness, reliability and respect of all. I loved being invited to their back yard. It was always a fun time! She is one of the favorite people I have ever known and it hurts my heart that she is gone. I learned so much from this beautiful human. Condolences to her family she loved so much and the many friends and family lucky enough to know and be part of her life. Delaine Haugen
