Obituary For Marion Louise Clarkson

Marion Louise Clarkson, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at her home in Grande Prairie at the age of 81 years.

Marion was born, August 24, 1938 and raised in the Crystal Creek area, east of Grande Prairie. After high school, she obtained her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta. Her first experience teaching was at the Montrose Elementary School in Grande Prairie. Marion moved on to teach in Innisfail, Claresholm, finally settling in Calgary where she taught for 26 years. She spent most summers travelling and studying in Italy, England, and Scotland. After retiring from teaching in 1993, Marion moved back to Grande Prairie where she and her friend Alice opened “Patchwork Cottage” on 102 St. They had 15 wonderful years in business, teaching and making friends with their creative quilters. Marion and Alice were instrumental in establishing the Northern Piecemakers Quilt Guild, sharing their love of quilting with others. Marion’s love of travel took her to visit almost every quilt store in western Canada and parts of United States.

Marion had many talents and interests, one of which was to give back to the community. She joined The Quilting Believers to make charity quilts for “preemies”, and many other needs. She thoroughly enjoyed attending most music and art events in the community. For many years, she was a member of the local chapter of the Alberta Council on Aging, the Heritage Estates Board of Directors, and a volunteer with the Grande Prairie Palliative Care Society.

She will be deeply missed by remaining family and many, many friends including: Alice Chrenek and her family; Stan Baker; Richard and Mandy Molenaar; Jean Hamel; Bernice Olafsun; Brenda Finch; and very special friends Donna Evans, Donna Gamble and her family.

Special thanks to Dr. Noga for the very compassionate care and friendship given to Marion over many years.

Marion was predeceased by her parents, Jim and Gertie Clarkson.

Due to COVID19 restrictions, a private Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 3, 2020 at 1:00pm. The celebration will be live streamed on Oliver’s Funeral Home’s Facebook page for those unable to attend. (https://www.facebook.com/olivers.funeral.home).

I was thrilled to learn there was a quilt shop in town when I moved to Grande Prairie in 2007. Marion's shop was always an interesting place to visit and shop. Marion was kind, friendly and welcoming. I attended Northern Piecemakers Quilt Guild for many years as well. Grande Prairie is so lucky to have this guild, thanks to Marion. She was a lovely lady who will be missed dearly by her quilting friends. Rest in peace Marion.

Am so sad to see Marion's obit today! Did have a FaceTime visit with her earlier this month, and was thinking about doing it again, as I just finished a quilt which used a bunch of fabrics from Patchwork Cottage! I know her health has not been good, but she was quite amazing at just keeping on with life! You will all miss her so much, and I am sad to know that I will not get to visit with her again.

The members of Piece Friends Quilt Guild (Fairview, Hines Creek, Worsley and surrounding areas) were sad to hear of Marion's passing. We all enjoyed our shopping trips to Patchwork Cottage. We never felt pressured to buy anything (although we didn't leave empty handed very often) and especially enjoyed our interactions with Marion and the staff. A very lovely lady who will be missed by many.

Marion Clarkson was a lovely lady! She was an excellent teacher who really cared about her students. She was a smart, quick witted woman who enjoyed her home, travel, and her friends! A creative person, she excelled at arts and crafts, and her quilt shop was her passion! Marion was a good friend, and she will be missed!

I was extremely saddened to hear if Marions passing and send you all my deepest sympathies. I met Marion and Alice at patchwork cottage and spent many weekends at classes and innumerable hours fondling beautiful fabrics with them coming up with new projects to sew. She was a very talented quilter and I cherish all her skills and her love of quilting that she shared. The last time our paths crossed was at a local quilt show last spring - she always remembered my children who spent hours napping in their car seats while I sewed in the shop.

It is with great sadness that I learned today of Marionâ??s passing when I went to phone her. I have such fond memories of the time we spent together in Calgary when we both taught for Calgary Board of Education. Marion was godmother to our son, now a father himself. She was such a talented teacher and a kind, caring lady. Rest In Peace, Marion, with Gertie and Jim.
