Obituary For Marjorie Reeta Wasylciw

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mom, grandmother, sister, and aunt, Marjorie Wasylciw (Phillips), on Monday, December 25th, 2023, in Grande Prairie, AB, at the age of 92 years.

Marj was fifth in a family of twelve children. She was born to Harry and Selena Phillips (Payette-Cruthers), on August 3, 1931, in Vermillion, AB. Marj was fifteen, in 1949, when Harry and Selena moved the family to a farm in Worsley, AB. She met and married a handsome young man named Anton. Marj and Anton married, in Worsley, March 14, 1951, and started their own family and farmstead, only ½ mile south of the Phillips’ farm.

Raised in a family of eleven siblings, and numerous nieces and nephews, family was important to Marj and over the years Marj’s and Anton’s family grew to six children. They spent all their waking hours raising the children and expanding their farm.

Marj had many interests over the years. Her cooking and baking skills were legendary.

August was her favorite season, when she would spend her time filling jars of preserves. Winter months allowed her a chance to apply her hands at crafts and putting jigsaw puzzles together. When not at the sewing machine, or spinning wool, Marj had either knitting needles or a crochet hook in her hands. From a young age Marj enjoyed country and western dancing, a passion that she retained late in life.

In 1976, the family farm was sold. Anton and Marj moved to Grande Prairie where they continued to work until retirement. She was most proud of the job she held at Zellers, selling fabrics and notions to customers.

Marjorie is survived by her four children: daughter Laura Epp (Doug), granddaughter Charlene (Don) Wold, great-granddaughter Kayley (Chad), great-granddaughter Jenna (Sam), great-great granddaughter Emma, grandson Rick Lofstrom (Joanie), great grandchildren Derek (Kate), great-great granddaughter Rhen, and granddaughter Mikayla (Taylor), great-great granddaughter Aubrey, great grandson Trenton, granddaughter Sharon Richter (Brian), and great-grandsons: Reid, Konrad, Brendan; daughter Linda Wasylciw, grandson Doland Fournier (Gwyneth), great-grandsons: Tristian, Rhys, Dacian, and Kian, granddaughter Tarra Fournier; fur babies Rieka and Freya; daughter-in-law Lori Lofstrom (Lloyd), grandson Robin Wasylciw (Lesley Flank), granddaughter Amanda Rombs (Randy), and great-grandchildren Cassandra and Faith; daughter Savanna Martinas, granddaughter Ginger Rode (Brandon), great-grandson Walker, great-granddaughter Eva; and son Ben Wasylciw (Leanne Harasymyk).

Marj was predeceased by her husband: Anton Wasylciw; sons: Larry Wasylciw and Tony Wasylciw; parents Harry and Selena Phillips; sister Lenona Sherburn; brother Melvin Phillips; sister Cora Hoover; sister Opal Paradowski; brother Rufus Phillips; brother Ralph Phillips; brother Otis Phillips. Marj will be missed by her siblings: Myrtle Satre, Russell Phillips, Eunice Lyttle, Theadore Phillips, extended family and friends.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Marj’s caregivers at the Grande Prairie Care Centre, for their many years of compassion and professional care.

There will not be a funeral service. Marj’s ashes will be interred at the Grande Prairie Cemetery, where she will be placed with her husband, Anton, and their beloved son, Tony Wasylciw.

Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society AB/NWT Division (200, 325 Manning Road NW, Calgary, AB, T2E 2P5).
