Obituary For Marlene Matlock
Marlene Harriet Matlock passed away peacefully Friday, February 12, 2016 at the QEII Hospital, at the age of 77 years.
She was born September 13, 1938 in Grande Prairie, AB to Martha "Mattie" (Good) and Harold Bowman of DeBolt, AB. Marlene received her early education in DeBolt, and High School in Grande Prairie, AB. She then worked at the Royal Bank in Grande Prairie for a few years. On August 5, 1960, she married Arthur Matlock of DeBolt, where they lived, farming and operating a Land Clearing Business with Art's brothers.
Art and Marlene were blessed with two children, Cameron and Michelle. Marlene was widowed as a result of an industrial accident, 13 years to the day of their engagement. She then became the family bread winner with several jobs over the years, first working at Perker’s Apriarie’s, next at the Ridgevalley Hutterite Colony as a Teacher’s Aid and lastly Post Mistress at the DeBolt Post Office until her retirement.
After her children graduated, she moved from the farm into the village of DeBolt where she remained until last week. Over the years, Marlene took an active part in the DeBolt Community, helping in clubs and organizations including: Sports Grounds, United Church, Community Hall, Museum, and the DeBolt Seniors Center to name a few. Marlene was a kind and caring individual, and a strong minded person who struggled for years with Crohn’s disease and later in life with cancer. On February, 12, 2016, she peacefully lost her cancer battle, with family at her side.
Marlene will be dearly missed by her son Cameron, his wife Teresa and their children Chantel and Jared; her daughter Michelle and her husband Dennis and their children Hannah and Cale; as well as her brother Wayne (Joan) Bowman, their children Melanie and Kent and their families; Arthur’s sisters and brothers and their families; the Stevenson and Prince Edward Island cousins and the community of DeBolt.
Marlene was predeceased by her Husband Arthur on February 2, 1973, Father Harold on May 13, 1991, and Mother Martha on December 7, 2000.
The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at the DeBolt Gospel Light Church, at 2:00pm.
Interment Service will follow at the DeBolt Cemetery, with a lunch to follow at the DeBolt Seniors Center.
A Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2016, at 7:30pm, at the DeBolt United Church for close family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada (600 60 St. Clair Avenue East, Toronto, ON, M4T 1N5) or the Canadian Cancer Society (103 9805 97 St., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 8B9).
The family would like to thank the rural home care nurses for their regular visits over the years. Their caring allowed mom to live in her own home until last week. They would also like to thank the staff of the QEII Hospital for the care and compassion Marlene and her family received during her short stay on 3 North.

Aunty Marlene, I remember you as such a sweet...soft spoken woman...fairly calm...except sometimes when we would come and visit and Cameron would make you mad...boy could you ever scream at the top of your lungs...and that made us run even faster. It was always so nice to see you whenever I would come back home in the last few years, always a kind word...and always a few good belly laughs. Cameron and Michelle and your families...I know its hard when we lose our Parents...there will be lots of tears, but also lots of memories you will hold in your hearts. But you will feel your Mom there with you on a daily basis...you will repeat words to your children, that she said to you...many times. And that is how she will live on in your hearts forever. She will finally be with Uncle Arthur again. Thinking of all of you at this time All my Love Your Cousin....Colleen
