Obituary For Mary Shmyruk Schuett

It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Schuett announce her passing on Monday, April 6, 2020, at the age of 73 years.

Mary, daughter of Michael and Anna Shmyruk, was born in Regensburg, Germany on December 13, 1946. The family left Germany on a ship for Canada when Mary was 3 years old. They travelled across the country to Alberta, and the Peace Country, where they settled outside of Rycroft in the Volin area. Mary attended the local grade school, went on to high school in Rycroft, and later to college in Fairview, AB.

She met Bernhard Schuett while working at Dunvegan Gardens, and they were married in 1969. They resided in Spirit River, AB, where Mary worked for a short time at a local bank and an insurance office, before they moved out to the family farm in Westmark, west of Woking, where they raised their three children.

Mary loved gardening. She grew the most beautiful flowers and often planted enough vegetables to feed half the countryside. Whenever there was a get-together, she loved cooking Ukrainian dishes and made enough food to feed a small army. She was always there to help out her family and friends and enjoyed being involved in the community.

Mary loved to spend time with her family, and found great joy seeing her grandchildren grow up. She often made time to go to dance recitals and hockey games to cheer them on.

Mary will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 50 years, Bernie; her children: Sylvia (Blake) Bouzek, Larry Schuett, Ken (Krista) Schuett; grandchildren: Brett, Riley, Emily, Lucas, and Cameron Schuett; her mother: Anna Shmyruk; brothers: Michael (Rose) Shmyruk, and Bob (Orma-Jean) Shmyruk; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was predeceased by her father Michael Shmyruk; father-in-law Henry Schuett; and mother-in-law Frieda Schuett.

The family would like to thank the nurses, doctors, staff, and palliative care at the Grande Prairie Cancer Clinic, along with Spirit River Homecare. A special thank you to Joan Hardy for her unwavering support of our immediate family.

There will be no memorial service.

Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (200, 325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, AB, T2E 2P5)

Ken, Krista, Bernie and family, sending our love to you as you mourn the lose of Mary. She was always welcoming. I remember sharing a meal with you at the farm, and, although sick, she did not let that stop her from fussing and feeding all of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this most difficult time.❤

She was Gramma Mary to my children for as many years as I knew her, a warm and caring woman she took me and my family in as one of her own when I visited the farm and when she visited Ontario. My thoughts and prayers are with Bernie and my good friends Ken and Krista and of course the rest of the family. What a battle, what spirit, I pray you are in peace now Mary. Hugs from my family to yours.
