Obituary For Mary Yurychuk Gacek

Mary Gacek, resident of Sexsmith, AB, passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, at Prairie Lake Senior’s Community in Grande Prairie, AB, at the age of 97 years.

Mary was born in Sexsmith on February 12, 1923. The Sexsmith community is where she was raised, and eventually where she began her own family. Mary raised her eight children with her husband Bill on their family homestead. In those early years, Mary was known for her determination as a wife and mother of such a robust family, her generous, delicious homegrown meals, her involvement in the CWL, her enjoyment of community dances, and her hospitality to friends and neighbours. Mary contributed to and cared for the community in which she spent her life.

She was a strong, kind woman who took great pride in her family. Mary was a great cook and a hard worker. She was fashionable and had a unique sense of humour. Mary enjoyed flower gardening, crocheting, and playing cards. Many of her grandchildren have fond memories of her teaching them to play crib, along with many others. She was a proud matriarch of her adoring family.

Mary will be sadly missed by her six surviving children: John (Diane) Gacek, Bernie (Aye) Gacek, Shirley Calvert, Joyce Viken, Marilyn Reeves and Donna Speerin; as well as her sixteen grandchildren and their spouses; twenty-five great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

She was predeceased by her children Dennis and Irene; her husband Bill; siblings: John (Marion) Yurychuk, George (Jean) Yurychuk, Anne (Jack) Johnson and Mike Yurychuk; and her parents Nick and Tilly Yurychuk.

Due to current COVID-19 health restrictions, a private service will be held for immediate family on Friday, February 5, 2021, at 11:00am, at Oliver’s Funeral Home. A livestream of the service will be available on her obituary page on the Oliver’s funeral Home website to view 15-20 minutes prior to the start of the service.

Memorial donations may be may to PARDS (710009 Rg Rd. 55, County of GP #1, T8W 5A7).
