Obituary For Maxine Sophia Alstad Nelson
Maxine Sophia Nelson, resident of Grande Prairie, AB formerly of Beaverlodge, AB passed away on Tuesday, March 9, 2021, at the QEII Hospital, at the age of 87 years.
Maxine was born to John and Matilda Alstad on May 24, 1933. She was raised in the Lake Saskatoon area on the family homestead. She married Arnie Olson in 1955 and had three children. Arnie passed away in 1965, and she was faced with supporting three young children on her own.
She went to work as an administrative secretary at the Beaverlodge Research Station and would continue to work there for the next 33 years. While working there, she met Marshall Nelson and they married in 1969. After living for a short while in Beaverlodge, they decided together to take on a life of farming, and never looked back.
Maxine was a strong and dedicated woman and took great pride in her work. She had a good-natured outlook on life and wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. She loved the farm and worked hard to raise her family. She enjoyed gardening and raising chickens. Everyone enjoyed her fresh-baked bread. Maxine also loved traveling with Marshall down to their home in Yuma, AZ where they enjoyed the weather and good friends for a total of 13 winters.
Several years ago, she survived a stroke and lost some of her short-term memory, but never lost her spirit in life. Post-stroke she continued to do the things she loved such as playing the piano, playing cards with friends, and enjoying drives around the countryside.
She will be lovingly remembered by her best friend and the love of her life Marshall Nelson; sister Grace; children: Carrie (Fred), Greg (Liz), and Kelly (Alanna); grandchildren: Steven (Jenine), Robyn (Jason), Nicole (Chris), Krista (Dustin), Joshua, Kaelin, and Kyle (Sierra); and great-grandchildren: Connor, Bentley, Phoenix, Jeffrey, Tenley, and Beckham. Maxine left a huge mark on all of our hearts.
Maxine was predeceased by her parents John and Matilda Alstad; her first husband Arnie Olson; siblings Jack, Miller, and Marlene; and brother-in-law Jim.
A Private Celebration in memory of Maxine will be held at a later date.
If anyone so desires, memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke of Alberta (144. 5241 Calgary Trail NW, Edmonton, AB, T6H 5G8).
