Obituary For Milka Pozega Matijevic

Milka Matijevic neé Pozega, resident of Spirit River, AB, formerly of Rycroft, AB, passed away quietly on Saturday, October 22, 2016, at the Central Peace Health Complex, at the age of 93 years.

Millie, as her friends called her, was born on November 4, 1922 in Slunj, Croatia to Ivan and Janja Pozega. Millie met her future husband Stjepan “Steve” Matijevic in Rome, Italy after WWII. They were married at the Vatican on November 9, 1949 and remained married for more than 67 years until her passing.

Steve and Millie left Italy for Chile in 1950. Their daughter, Maria, was born there later that year. Steve and Millie left Chile in 1957 and moved to the Peace River area, settling in Rycroft shortly afterwards. Their son John was born in Sprit River in 1959.

Steve and Millie started farming in 1963. They built their home on the farm that year and lived there until moving to Pleasant View Lodge in 2012. Millie was very active in the Rycroft Church and was a long-time member of the CWL. Millie loved to cook and bake, she also enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crochet. Millie loved the time she spent visiting with the many friends she and Steve had.

Millie was very close to her grandchildren Travis and Tylor. She was always ready to bake them a pie or take them to see Greg and Warren. Millie was very happy when her great-grandchildren Tanner and Shanelle arrived and was always excited when they came to visit.

She will be sadly missed by her husband of 67 years Steve; children Maria Matijevic of Calgary, and John Matijevich of Spirit River; grandson Travis Matijevich (Tamara) of Calgary; granddaughter in-law Shantel Merritt; great-grandchildren Tanner and Shanelle Merritt of Lethbridge; as well as her many friends.

Millie was predeceased by her parents Ivan and Janja, three brothers and three sisters in Croatia, and her grandson Tylor Matijevich (Shantel) of Rycroft.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 12:00pm at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Rycroft, AB with interment at Old Mission Cemetery in Spirit River, AB.

Maria, I am very sorry to hear of the passing of your Mom. She will always be "Auntie Millie" to me. I have so many good memories of your Mom especially in the kitchen and at her sewing machine. Mostly I remember her smiling. I can still hear her voice too and her laugh. I'll never forget how she comforted me when my Dad was dying and the huge roaster of cabbage rolls she made for us. I believe that food is love too. I treasure her recipe. Frances

I was so sad to hear about the loss of your mom. She was a great person and I have many fond memories of her from childhood. She made the best bread and homemade treats. At home we only ever got one cookie, but she would always let us eat as many as we wanted. I remember not being able to eat brownies for several months after a visit with your Mom. She was a kind and loving lady. Our prayers are with you. John & Harriet Paul & family

Sorry to hear about the loss of your mother and my thoughts are with you. No matter what their age it is always hard to see them go. She is now resting and at peace. Take care and thinking of you.
