Obituary For Norman Berger Wold

Norman Berger Wold, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of Buffalo Lake, AB, passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at the University of Alberta Hospital, Edmonton, AB, at the age of 92 years.

Norman was born September 5, 1927 on the family farm near La Glace, AB. His parents were Mary and Olaf Wold. He went to the Canuck school, near La Glace. With a grade 5 education and his entrepreneurial spirit, he was able to attain his mechanical license and learned how to do the finances for the family farm. He married Irene Johnson January 22, 1947. Norman and Irene moved around Alberta for work beginning in Beaverlodge, then Peace River, Bentley, Alder Flats and finally settling in the La Glace area the fall of 1956, where Norman and Irene bought Pete Stein’s farm. They lived on the homestead for 54 years, a mile away from where he grew up, until 2011.

Norman will be remembered as a gentle soul. He would help anyone who needed assistance. He loved to laugh. He loved to tease, and he loved his family. Norman could fix almost anything, whether it was welding or mechanics. The only thing he didn’t want to help with is if it involved a hammer or a saw. Norman enjoyed his hobbies of hunting, fishing, being a mechanic and farming.

He will be fondly and lovingly remembered by his children: Dianne Delaney (Ed Welsh), Gail (Neil) Sandboe, Randy (Deb Ness), Roger (Valerie), Janice (D’Arcy) Johnson, Sherry (Allen) Avery, Donald (Charlene), and Dennis (Tina); 23 paternal grandchildren; 31 paternal great-grandchildren; numerous "adopted" grand and great-grandchildren; sister Loreen Berg; brother in-law Allen Johnson; and sister in-law Ina Johnson.

Norman was predeceased by his wife Irene Wold, nine of his siblings, in-laws, and sons in-law Bert Delaney and Rod Neufeld.

A Viewing will be held on Sunday, January 12, 2020 at 7:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.).

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, January 13, 2020 at 2:00pm, at Grande Prairie Alliance Church (15502 102 St.)

Memorial donations may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church (Box 204, La Glace, AB, T0H 2J0).

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of Norman's family. As I read this, I had to wipe away my tears as he was such a wonderful person to all that knew him. Anytime we saw him at Wild Rose Manor, he always made a point of greeting us and taking a few minutes to talk to us with his familiar smile. He will be missed.

Deepest condolences from Mom, Cheryl, Wendy, Deb, Janice and Brenda and our families to you all. Uncle Norman was one of our favourite Uncles for he was always full of fun and teasing. For me I was the lucky one as I shared his Birthday and so for many years we had a game of who would phone each other first to wish Happy Birthday. I have to say he usually won! He will be missed by Mom the most as I know he was a very special brother to her. Mom and Dad shared many happy times and special visits together with your parents. Wishing you all peace, love and many happy memories.

My deepest sympathies to all of you and your families. Some of my fondest memories were coming out to the farm as a child and riding the ponies or on the combines with Janice or Sherry.

I have always had the greatest respect for Uncle Norman. Every time I have met him over the years, he always had a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face. He was a great example of how one should live their life and appreciate what is around you. He helped out our family many years ago and it will never be forgotten. Unfortunately we will not be able to attend the funeral service as we are currently travelling. Thank you and Rest in Peace, Uncle Norman. David & Tannis Trydal
