Obituary For Otto Gunther Selke
Otto Gunther Selke was born on February 27, 1935, in Calais Alberta. He passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2025, in Grande Prairie, Alberta at the age of 89.
Otto was a very social and caring man. He was either visiting someone or calling family and friends to check up on their lives and how they were doing. Otto was a man of many talents; he was considered a MacGyver because he was very skilled at fixing any mechanical related items. Otto had met a young lady that had caught his eye, her name was Lillian Judd, they married, with time they parted ways. Otto was fortunate to meet a very special person, Mabel Jantz. They were together for years until Mabel passed away.
He would tell great stories of running cats from Valleyview to Little Smokey as well as hauling fuel, when they were building Highway 43. He then started working for Bill and Ted Reimer doing seismic work and clearing farmland in the area. He eventually, went to work for Western Geophysical doing seismic work in the Arctic and farming in the Summer. He worked at Youngs Point Park for a couple of summers and thoroughly enjoyed it. Eventually going to work for the Sherks Excavating, crushing and hauling gravel and assorted equipment.
Otto moved in with us (Byron and Debbie Minni) in the Summer of 2009. We had just moved into a new house. He enjoyed socializing as well as playing cards with family and friends.
After his retirement he loved to go trapping, mostly for the ride, whether it be on the skidoo or the side by side. When it was possible he liked to take others to the trapline with him, to enjoy the adventure and show them the tricks of the trade. He loved to spend time at the new cabin, with friends and hunting buddies. Later in life, he spent a lot of time on his cell phone keeping up with his friends, so he always knew what everyone was doing.
Otto leaves to mourn nephews: Steve Selke and Curtis Selke, nieces: Barb Gray (Conrad), Alisa Burton (Tom), sisters-in-law Mildred Selke and Gladys Cote (Russell).
Many step nieces and nephews and step grandchildren and cousins; Dwight Selke (Bettyann), Kurt Selke (Norma-Gay).
He was predeceased by his mother – Theresa Selke, Father – Max Selke, brothers: Ernie Selke and Ralph Selke and Lillian Selke and Mable Jantz.
A Viewing will take place on Friday, February 7, 2025, at 10:00 am, at Debolt Community Centre (72127 Range Rd 11, Debolt AB. Memorial Service to follow.

I remember Otto, Jimmy and Dad going to the zoo for a beer, Otto and dad lifted up the back of Jimmy's vw and Jimmy was spinning his wheels and wondering why he wasn't moving! They let go, dropping the vw, which gave a chirp and off Jimmy went. Dad and Otto had a good laugh.

Condolences to the Selke family. Otto would stop in at the store, just to see how things were, or shoot the bull. Always enjoyed his visits
