Pete Chernuka, resident of Spirit River, AB, peacefully passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2023, at the Central Peace Health Complex, at the age of 96 years.

Pete was born April 3, 1926, in Greenway, near Rycroft, AB. He married Olga (nee Kobylanski) on December 28, 1947, and raised 4 children on a mixed farming operation just northeast of Rycroft. He also worked off the farm in the field of carpentry helping build many structures in the Peace Country area. His skills were unlimited and included anything from electrical, welding, mechanics, to plumbing. There wasn’t much he couldn’t fix.

He was a devoted husband and father, and time with family was of high importance. A weekend gathering on the farm of horseshoes, baseball, or cards brought many fond memories to all of us. He had a love for camping and fishing with so many stories to go with it. He even learned how to golf at the young age of 80.

Pete and Olga retired to Spirit River in 1995, followed by their move to the Pleasant View Lodge in 2018.

Pete had lots of pride in doing a good job at whatever he did. He was an honest man, if he was paid one penny too much he’d want to pay it back. The family were blessed he had his memory and humour right until the end.

Pete will be sadly missed by Olga his wife of 75 years; children: Elaine (Ross) Sirockman, Ken (Linda) Chernuka, Cindy (Cameron) Wlad, and Angie (Ryan) McGonigal: grandchildren: Christine (Dean) Turner, Nicole Sirockman, Corey (Juli) Chernuka, Justine Yanishewski, and Cody Yanishewski, great-grandchildren: Justin Chernuka and Harlynn Yanishewski; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.

He was predeceased by his mother Tatianna; father Stepan; sisters Anne Didow and Mary Babiuk; as well as brothers John and Bill Chernuka.

The family would like to thank Pleasant View Lodge, Homecare nurses, Paramedics, as well as the Doctors and Nurses at the Central Peace Health Complex for the care Pete received.

As per Pete’s request, there will be no funeral service. He will be laid to rest at the Greenway Cemetery at a later date.
