Obituary For Philippe Roy

With great sadness we announce the passing of Philippe Henri Roy of Sexsmith, AB, on Thursday, November 5, 2015, at the QEII Hospital, at the age of 66 years, after a 9 month battle with kidney cancer.

Phil was born October 21, 1949 to Rose and Louis Roy in Montreal, QC and was raised in Edmonton, AB from the age of 5. On September 4, 1971 he married Janet Halvorson. They resided in Edmonton until moving north to Sexsmith, AB in 1975. He was raised in the Roman Catholic Church and retained his strong belief in God.

He was a licensed gasfitter, steamfitter and plumber who enjoyed working for the City of Grande Prairie for over 30 years, first in the Facilities Department and later as a plumbing inspector in the City Inspection Services. Prior to that, he worked various union jobs, helped install the steam and gas at the Golden Inn, the current QEII Hospital, Weyerhauser and the Sexsmith Canola plant where he continued working for 6 years.

Phil will be remembered for his good nature, his helping hand, his ability to fix anything and the love he had for his family. He was a very caring husband, father, grandfather, friend and pet owner.

Phil thought the world of his co-workers at the City of Grande Prairie.

One of his greatest passions was hunting. He loved camping, fishing, gardening, dancing, soul music and collecting treasures of all kinds. He was a volunteer of the Sexsmith Fire Department for 17 years and coached T-ball in Sexsmith.

Phil will be sadly missed by his loving wife Janet, his eldest son Jim of Thornhill, ON and his youngest son Ben (Victoria); cherished grandchildren: Cale Roy, Bryston Roy and Mikenna Pastion of Grande Prairie, AB; his mother Rose Roy, his brother Ray (Pam) Roy, his sister June (Ken) Turner; brother George Roy; and his special twin sister Carmen (Harry) Mack as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends, and especially his in-laws, Orma-Jean and Bob Shmyruk.

He was predeceased by his father Louis Roy, niece Heather Turner, father in-law Herman Halvorson, and mother in-law, Vera Halvorson.

At Phil’s request a private family celebration of his life will be held with interment at the Grande Prairie Cemetery.

Thank you to Dr. Valentine Duta, Dr. Marie Moreau of the Grande Prairie Cancer Clinic and the dedicated staff of 5 North at the QEII Hospital for his wonderful care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Canadian Cancer Society (#103, 9805 97 St., Grande Prairie, AB T8V 8B9), or to a charity of your choice.
