Obituary For Ralph (Pete) Walker

Ralph Joseph Walker, known as “Pete” to his friends and even more lovingly as “The Don” to his family as he sat with his signature “Robin Hood” hat and his glass of whisky straight, left us to join his love and lifelong partner Vera on Sunday, December 11, 2016, at the age of 101 years.

Dad was born in Doland, South Dakota on July 19, 1915 and immigrated to Canada with his family at the age of 4.

The family settled in the Salt Prairie District. It was there he met and married the love of his life Vera Wolfe in 1940. Together for 68 years, they had 16 children, 3 of whom died at birth, and 13 who are with us today, the youngest being 52.

Over the years they were blessed with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.

Dad lived a full life, imparted his wisdom and beliefs on as many has he could. His motto for a good life was: “Family is everything”.

Dad lost his life partner Vera in 2008 as well as numerous other family members through the years.

A Celebration of Dad’s life will be held on Monday, December 19, 2016, at 1:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.). Interment to follow at Grande Prairie Cemetery (84th Ave, and 112th St.).

What a guy! I just wanted to send my thoughts to the family at this time to tell them that their dad/grandpa was as nice as they come! I served him for years at Zellers restaurant where his laugh was loud and made everyone smile! He loved to talk and tease😊 I left the restaurant to become a nurse so never saw him for years, then when my grandma moved to the lodge I heard that laugh and knew it was Pete! He made my grandma feel welcome there. Such a great guy! Praying you all will be filled with love and comfort and laughter remembering him!

Hello! I'm sure you don't know me, but I had the pleasure of talking with Pete on a bit of a regular occurance, years ago. I used to bring my small dog in to the Heritage Lodge as a volunteer for St John's Ambulances therapy dog program, I did it for a few years! Pete loved to see my little dog and chat about the old days. He often told me about how he had sled dogs and stories about trapping/hunting and riding the rails. I believe he even showed me a wedding picture! I just wanted to send my condolences and let you know that I really enjoyed my chats with Pete and I often looked forward to them when bringing my dog in for a visit. He had a wonderful laugh and his smile was contagious, he was a pleasure to visit with. Sending you warm wishes.

To Petes family, I am so sorry for your loss. I just met him a couple times when I came to reunions in 1996 and 2006. I really enjoyed visiting with him and listening to his stories and his hearty laughter. Watching him and Vera dancing, they were always the first ones to start .I wish that I had known my cousin Pete and Vera over the years. I think we would have been good friends. We lived such a distance apart but I really have happy memories of meeting him and Vera and all the rest of the family at the reunions I came too. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. What a lucky family to have had Pete in your lives for so many years. With love , Montana Calhoun Saunders.
