Obituary For Raymond Sather
Raymond “Bud” Sather, resident of Wanham, AB, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2021, at Prairie Lake Hospice in Grande Prairie, AB, at the age of 79 years, following a short battle with cancer.
Bud was born in Grande Prairie to parents Emil and Mary Sather and spent all his life on the farm. He attended the local school followed by one year of Agriculture at Fairview Ag College.
In 1961, Bud married Laverne Albert and children, Roger, Mark and Linda, followed soon after. Bud was always a farmer at heart and in 1962, the family farm Langnes Co-Op was formed he started his dream career, which included milking dairy cows, helping run a cow-calf operation, a steer feedlot, and helping with 4-H calves.
When they decided to go into straight grain farming, he was never happier than to be on a piece of farm equipment cultivating, seeding, haying, harvesting, trucking, you name it, it was his life’s work. Even so, family holidays were very precious. With money or without, whether it be near or far, he made them fun! And after retirement, he and Laverne took many hot destination vacations.
He was very active within the community on sports days, horseshoe and ball tournaments, curling and golfing.
Bud had a strong faith and was an active member of the Presbyterian Church serving on boards and assisting whenever needed.
When he retired at 64, he and wife Laverne became the “Family Patriarchs” leading the way in family events and functions. They were generally the first to hook up to the trailer and head out to the next camping spot to be ready for fun and games.
Bud will be sadly missed by wife Laverne; brothers Alan (Ramona) Sather, and Jim Sather; sister Ann Mickanuck; children: Roger Sather, Mark (Loretta) Sather, and Linda (Reg) Diebert; grandchildren: Marie Fournier, Tabatha (Mitchell) Martin, Amanda Sather, Lee (Candace O’Rourke) Diebert, and Amy (Mitchell Lane) Diebert;
great-grandchildren: McKayla, Tristan, Austin, Dante, Aidan, Jax, Christian, Jasper and Octavia.
Bud was predeceased by his parents Emil and Mary Sather, brothers Stanley, Harold, and Sam, and granddaughter Amber Diebert.
Due to Covid restrictions, an invitation only service will be held on Friday, April 30, 2021, at 1:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie, AB.
A livestream will be available to view five minutes before the start of the service on Bud’s obituary page.
Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society AB/NWT Division (200, 325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, AB, T2E 2P5) or Forbes Presbyterian Church (9635 76 Ave., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 5B3).
