Obituary For Ritchie Percival McRae

Ritchie Percival McRae, longtime resident of Grande Prairie, passed away on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at the age of 90 years.

He was born in the old log hospital in Grande Prairie, on May 29, 1927. He was second youngest in a family of six born to Richie and Evelyn McRae. He grew up on the family homestead a few miles north of the city.

Ritchie attended Montrose School until grade 9 when he quit to help on the farm. For most of his school years, he traveled the 3 miles cross-country by horseback, on foot, or by horse and cutter.

Ritchie married Barbara Small on June 25, 1947 and together they farmed and raised their five children. Besides farming, he worked various jobs in the lumber and oil industry and as a grader operator. He was an avid gardener, enjoyed curling, golf, fishing, hunting and camping. For 10 years, he was always available to transport grandsons to hockey games. He was their biggest fan!

Ritchie spent many enjoyable hours volunteering at Evergreen Park, helping to build the Old Timers Cabin. He was also on the board of the Old Timers Association and president of the Clairmont Seniors Centre for 22 years. His involvement made him and Barb many lifetime friends. Their house was always full of family and friends, good food and laughter, quite often ending with a game of cards.

Ritchie will be sadly missed by his wife of 70 years Barbara; children: Marilyn, Clara (Alf) Parlee, Sandra East, Gary (Betty) McRae, and Glenda (Monte) Marsh; 16 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents Richie and Evelyn; siblings: Myrtle Partlow, Ethel Penson, Edgar McRae, Elma Boe, and Frances Wozny; and son in-law Jim East.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at 11:00am, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.). Luncheon to follow. A Viewing will be held prior at 10:00am.

Interment will be held at 2:00pm at Glen Leslie Cemetery.
