Obituary For Roland William White
Roland William White, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of Whitecourt, AB, passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2021, at the Grande Prairie Care Centre, at the age of 64 years.
Roland was born in Aklavik, NWT, to Ronald Addison and Jean White. Roland grew up in several different communities in the Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, and Manitoba. After high school, Roland pursued post-secondary education at the Universities of Winnipeg and Regina. His summer student employment program included the Manitoba Provincial Park Patrol in Falcon Lake and later with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Russell, MB. Roland aspired to follow in his father’s footsteps and joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1979. His first posting was to Picture Butte, AB, and he provided 35 years of service at six other communities, all in Alberta.
Roland had many different interests from fishing, hunting, and camping. He loved his motorcycle and travelling. He loved science fiction literature and creating art in many different forms. He had a love of music and playing guitar, which was self-taught.
He was a genuine, kind soul who loved talking to people and making them laugh. He enjoyed a good meal, drink, music, and friendship. Roland has many good friends and co-workers who enjoyed his company.
Roland dedicated his life to his career, and never married. His dedication to duty allowed him to receive the K Div Commander Officer commendations due to his self-sacrifice and sense of duty. Roland, not being a strong swimmer, had saved the lives of two youths that would have drowned in the Red Deer River if it was not for his quick actions. He dedicated himself again and again to providing police service to the communities that he lived in. He deserves to be called “Hero”.
In 2014, Roland finally retired as a Mountie. His health was now strained from years of injuries and accidents. He succumbed to his afflictions and COVID-19.
Many thanks to all the health care workers at the QEII Hospital and Grande Prairie Care Centre – Swan Court, and friends in Grande Prairie, as they provided care for Roland for several years and during this horrific pandemic.
Roland will be sadly missed by his brother Wayne (Jaquie) White; brother Curtis (Sharla) White; sister Janice (Larry) Yausie; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins, who will miss their uncle Rollie.
He was predeceased by his father Ronald Addison White from Newcastle, NB; mother Jean (Ostafichuk) White from Sheho, SK, she passed away on December 19, 2020, just 22 days before Roland, also due to COVID-19.
The family will be celebrating his life and interment at a later date to be determined, in Regina, SK.
Memorial donations may be made to Diabetes Canada – Calgary (#220, 6223 2 St. SE, Calgary, AB, T2H 1J5).

I have just learned of Roland's passing and am saddened and shocked that covid took another good person off this Earth. I used to work in the comcenter and looked forward to hearing his stories every night when he would call in. Sometimes I would be smiling for days. He was always full of fun and brought up my spirits on difficult long days of work. I hadn't talked to him for many years but the essence of who he was still sticks with me to this day. May he rest in peace, strumming his guitar for his Angel family. Belated condolences to his family for the loss of Roland and his mom.

To the White Family, my sincere condolences on your loss. Big Rollie will be missed greatly. His deep laugh and philosophy on life will be missed. I worked with Rollie along highway 43 in the 90's. Every shift was different and unexpected if Rollie was working. You never knew what was going to happen. His stories on life in general and his motorcycle escapades are timeless. Not to mention, hunting - how he enjoyed his moose meat. Patrol was never the same when I left the area, because of his attentive to detail and the stories that would come of each stop. Buddy, your shift is over now. Raised your feet without pain, read a good book, and enjoy a Moose Meat meal. RIP.

I am a troop mate of Rowlandâ??s and his pit bed was near me. As his obituary states, he enjoyed helping and providing many laughs throughout our training. Even though I have not seen or spoken to him since our graduation, my memories of him are sharp. He had a kind heart and never spoke harshly of anyone and always had a smile on his face, RIP Roland you have earn d your rest.

I first met Rollie in 1985 at Sylvan Lake and our paths crossed many times over our careers in several detachments. My wife also worked along side Rollie in her job as a court clerk in the Slave Lake area. We will remember him for his kindness, humour and booming laughter. Rest in Peace, Rollie.

It is with the greatest sadness that I have just learned of the passing of Roland. Rollie and I were co-workers and good friends when stationed on Mayerthorpe Traffic Services for about 7 years. Even though we were transferred in different directions, we maintained contact and friendship over the years. Rollie's great sense of humor and that deep laughter was a trademark of his. My children were always entertained by Roland's presence when he came over. He was kind of a tease with them and that Santa Claus tone of laughter was what they remembered of him. He was a man always willing to help out and thoughtful of others. Like many of Us, food was a great passion for him. A good home cooked meal was always appreciated by him with a gleam on his face. Rollie, you will be missed by many. Thank you for being a great friend. I'm quite sure that you are up there and have the choir of angels splitting their gut in laughter. May the good Lord grant you eternal rest, My Friend. God Bless.

White family. Sorry for the passing of your brother. I delivered meals to Roland, and got to become a friend. If there is anything I can help with here in GP, as I know it is distant for you, let me know. Kind regards

My deepest sympathy to the family in the loss of Roland and Jean. Norm and I met Ron and Jean when we were transfered into The Pas in 1965 and they were most helpful in finding us a place to live. Accommodation there was very hard to find. Roland and Wayne were young boys at that time. We became good friends and kept in touch over the years as each of us were transfered to different places. My last contact with Jean was last Christmas and when my card was returned this year I wondered what happened. Both Roland and Jean will be greatly missed. A good family. May God bless. Sincerely, Doreen Brisbin

Very sad to hear of this. I met him when I was working in Sylvan Lake / Jarvis Bay Provincial Park(s), and when I moved to Slave Lake, he transferred in not long after I arrived and again our paths crossed in Edson/Whitecourt and AGAIN on occasion in Grande Cache when he passed through on his Highway 40 patrols. Roland ALWAYS had a good story to tell and kept us all entertained at coffee, social events or the low and slow moments during joint Agency checkstops and investigations. He was always willing to help out and offer assistance to Park Rangers and Conservation Officers as that is how he 'cut his teeth' in his long and memorable career. Rest in Peace, Rollie. Godspeed. My sincere condolences to his family and close friends.

We shared many years of work and friendship. Over the years transfers and life moved us in different directions, but we are one more great soul less with his passing. After all Roland's trademark saying was ... "Why be normal". Miss you young guy.
