Obituary For Rosa Lemke

It is with both sadness and relief that the family shares Rosa’s transition from this life to the next. Surrounded by the love of her family, her long struggle ended peacefully on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at the age of 79 years.

This incredible lady will always be remembered for being a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Rosa had a generous and giving heart, who cherished time spent with family and friends.

Rosa was born and raised on a small farm in Bavaria, Germany on July 4, 1943. While working at a resort she was introduced to Notger Lemke, who would become her future husband of nearly 59 years. They were married on June 18, 1964, and began a lifelong adventure by immigrating to Montreal, Canada in 1965.

While in Montreal she learned English, quickly became a mother of three girls, was an entrepreneur and worked her magic to make a home for her growing family. Her generous heart helped foster many long-term friendships. Incredibly industrious, determined, and creative, she became resourceful and independent. Her needlework, crochet, and sewing abilities garnered a lot of attention. With the family growing by one more. This time, a son, she continued her dedication to the family and her small business.

In 1976, the family moved to Kitchener, Waterloo, ON. Her circle of friends grew quickly, and she concentrated on supporting her children and exploring her more artistic side. She discovered the joy of bowling which would later extend to her love of lawn bowling. She loved swimming, cross-country skiing, and skating with her family.

In 1980, the family grew by yet one more, another son, and the final family move set its roots in Grande Prairie, AB. She enjoyed hosting and sharing her culinary skills. Her traditional strudel was particularly loved by family and friends.

Never one to be idle, she established a home childcare business before eventually working for the Grande Prairie Catholic School Board. A position she led for over 18 years until her retirement.

During her retirement years, Rosa and Notger were fortunate enough to spend some time in Mesa, Arizona. Here, she brought her focus back to art and started to explore her creativeness through various media. A particular highlight was hiking in the Grand Canyon. She loved the club community atmosphere and expanded their circle of friends even more.

Always wanting to honor her German heritage, the Grande Prairie Society of German Canadians was her most cherished community. She was both honored and blessed by their continued support throughout her challenging battle.

Rosa is survived by her devoted husband Notger; siblings: Ella, Agnes, and Ludwig; daughter Karin Slater (Josh), granddaughters Nicole and Keely (Damian) and great-grandson Leon; daughter Madeleine Escobar (Angel), grandsons Simon and Luke; daughter Petra Dempsey (Rick); as well as sons Christopher and Richard, grandchildren Jacob and Kamara.

She was predeceased by parents Heinrich and Maria Artmann; as well as siblings: Maria, Joseph, Karl, and Hans.

Mother, you left us beautiful memories, your love is still our guide, although we cannot see you, you’re always at our side.

With great appreciation and love, the family wishes to thank the Grande Prairie Care Centre for all that they did for Rosa and continue to do for so many others.

A Celebration of her faith and Life will take place this springtime.
