Obituary For Rose Potrebenko Ames
Rose Ames passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at the Grande Prairie Care Centre, with her granddaughter Angela by her side.
Rose originally wrote this obituary when she was 66.
Rose was born in a homestead shack near Woking, AB on January 13, 1932, but her father registered her as being born February 13, 1932.
One of her greatest joys was receiving a Business School diploma from St. Joseph’s Business College in 1949.
Rose met Donald Ames of Bezanson, and they were married in November 1951. In May of 1953, they bought two quarters of land in Bezanson from Harry and Mabel Beaver. They farmed for 25 years, during which time Ken was born in 1953, Debbie in 1955 and Tom in 1957. From 1959, for 21 years, she was a spare school bus driver for Don in Bezanson. She was very active in the Bezanson Home and School during the children’s growing-up years and was also an active member of the local curling club.
In 1978, the farm was sold, and they moved to the hamlet of Bezanson. Rose continued to be a spare school bus driver for various drivers until 1986.
In 1986, Don and Rose made the big move to Grande Prairie, and lived there to this day. In July 2006, they moved to Heritage Lodge. Rose had been plagued with poor health since 1978.
Rose is survived by her son Ken (Karen); daughter Debbie (John Buitenhuis); son Tom; 3 grandchildren: Ryan, Angela (Mike Mohr), and Lisa (Greg Breukelman); 5 great-grandchildren (Kendyl, Dawson and Rya Mohr, Nora and Parker Breukelman); brother Mike Potrebenko from Port Alberni; sister Helen (Earl Scott) of Burnaby; sisters in-law: Ruby Potrebenko of Victoria and Mary Potrebenko of Edmonton.
She was predeceased by her husband Don in 2014, brother Michael in 1935, father in 1984, mother in 1994, and brother Arthur in 1998.
A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 20, 2016, at 2:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Glen Leslie Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army Food Bank (9615 102 St., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 2T8).
