Obituary For Roy McNichol

We will cherish our memories of Roy.

On Monday, September 11, 2017, Roy McNichol passed away peacefully at the age of 79 years.

Born in Lethbridge, AB, on January 9, 1938, Roy saw the world with curiosity and enjoyed the company of those who shared the same outlook on life. He was most happy in the wilderness; camping, fishing, hunting. Roy always marveled at a good meal, no matter how simple. He engaged in a good scotch, providing he had company to share it with.

Roy and his wife, Elsie, shared love for their children, grandchildren, and baseball. It was also Roy’s good fortune to know and love Mas Ito, his lifelong friend, who inspired him to act with integrity and live with gratitude.

Elsie and Roy were married 56 years. Their son Mas (Karen), daughters Chantelle (Doug) and Donna (Gene) and foster son Victor (Pat), along with grandchildren: Josh (Morgan), Rachel (Travis), Katherine, Kayla, Kathleen and Edward, deeply mourn the loss of their father and grandfather. Comfort is found in knowing he lived a robust life.

A Gathering to celebrate Roy’s life will take place on Saturday, September 23, 2017, from 1:00-4:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.).

Roy was well known for delivering bouquets to demonstrate his appreciation. On this occasion the family asks that, in lieu of a bouquet even Roy would admire, a donation be made to your choice of two worthy organizations that played important roles in his life: Wood’s Homes Foundation (805 37 St. NW, Calgary, AB, T2N 4N8) and the Breathe Easy Program at the Edmonton General Hospital (cheques payable to: Edmonton General Hospital - Memo: Breathe Easy, Room 3C60, 11111 Jasper Ave. Edmonton, AB, T5K 0L4).

Condolences

Dear Elsie, Please accept our sincere condolences on the passing of Roy. He was a great man with tremendous integrity, honesty and generosity. You and Roy have been amazing Grandparents to Josh. I know Josh loved the times he spent with Grandpa and Grandma camping and fishing. And the time Josh and Morgan spent with you and Roy last year in Grande Prairie was truly special to both of them. Personally, I have always considered Roy a close friend and one of the hardest working men I have ever met. I still cherish some great times with Roy and although it was many years ago, they are still fresh in my memory. Friday nights at the Alco Drywall shop in Red Deer is one of them. I was in awe of those guys sitting at that table enjoying a Lemon Hart rum and coke (maybe more than one) after a hard week of work. And then Roy would be making a giant breakfast the next morning for his family and whoever else wanted to show up. Many memories but not enough space to write. Love to you and your family, Glen & Mona Stock

Please accept my heart felt condolences on the passing of a good man and friend of mine for many years. Yes we to shared many glasses of rum and more than a few scotches Friday nights and while hunting and fishing ( what goes on at hunting and fishing camp stay's at hunting and fishing camp). We also shared many stories and laughs, caught way more fish than we needed and shared many a moose or deer steak and even fresh liver. You knew that hunting with Roy meant that soon the fun is over and the work would begin. Who could forget the time we took my fishing boat goose hunting in Eastern Alberta ( over the prairie roads and fields -people must have thought we were nuts or Lost) and then off to Canoe Lake in Northern Saskatchewan for some much deserved fishing. Or the time when we first met and Roy was out hunting and found a small beaver damn full of Fish ( I think they were arctic grayling ) and the following weekend we went hunting and took our fishing rods.We caught a Hole bunch of fish, took them home, cleaned them and the next morning along with our families we ate the whole catch. There may have been a couple of fish that were over our limit and so the tale began. Lots and lots of memories and sharing. He was a good man, a perfectionist in his work, a good boss, a good provider and husband and father and grandfather May you rest in peace. Bryan

It has been a long time since we were neighbors & friends but I remember the many good times we had.Our kids played with your kids & Roy helped me build a playhouse for them. It is too bad that time has a way of stopping the togetherness of your friends. I,along with my family send our sincere condolences to you Elsie & your family.

Our sincere sympathy in the passing of Roy. We remember fondly the great neighbors who lived across the street from us in Red Deer. Glenn recalls the hunting and fishing trips he shared with Roy. We know that as a loving husband, father and Grandfather, he will be greatly missed. Blessings from Glenn and Marna

Elsie and family, My sincere condolences on the loss of your beloved husband and father. I remember with thanks the kindness you and Roy showed to my family many years ago when my children were very young and you looked after them so I could have a honeymoon with my husband. May God's peace be with you. Sincerely, Elaine Schear
