Obituary For Sharon Leona Turner Kuykendall

Sharon Leona Kuykendall (née Turner), life-long Grande Prairie resident, died peacefully Thursday, February 23, 2017, in Grande Prairie, of complications from a brain tumour, at the age of 73 years.

She was born in 1943, in Grande Prairie, second child of David (“Dave”) Edson and Mildred Florence (née Allen) Turner. Sharon excelled as a farm home maker, church member and neighbour. She organized many bridal and baby showers, and special birthday and wedding anniversary receptions for friends, neighbours and church members. She was truly “Mrs. Hospitality.”

An accomplished seamstress and custom garment maker, a jacket she designed for her daughter inspired a Sun Ice ski jacket line.

Sharon was an active member of Grande Prairie Church of Christ in many roles including a favourite responsibility of cooking for summer camps.

In 1982, Sharon and her husband, Lyle, bought a Merle Norman Cosmetics studio. For nearly twenty years, Sharon managed it making many customers her friends.

Generous to a fault, Sharon loved people, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A year after Lyle, her husband of 53 years, died (2013), Sharon found domestic happiness again in marriage to Dave Bertrand in 2014.

She was also predeceased by her parents Dave (1994) and Mildred (2000), and her brother Lee (2005).

Sharon Leona Kuykendall leaves to mourn husband Dave Bertrand; brother Robert (Sheila); children: Russell, Anne, Allen (Karen), Ian (Shelley), Kurt (Tammy) and Carla (Kevin); seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service and Interment were held on Sunday, February 26, 2017.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations designated to Pineridge Adventure Camp, payable to Grande Prairie Church of Christ (9602 92 Ave., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 0H4), would be appreciated.

I recall meeting Sharon on several trips to Grande Prairie while on our Alberta Bible College trips up to the church. She was always a gracious host and I enjoyed meeting the mother of Anne and Russ who were my class mates. My condolences to the whole family.

When I left GP for seminary our youngest daughter was not quite 18 years old. She worked for Merle Norman. Sharon was much more than a boss. She took our daughter under her wing and "mothered" her in the absence of her own mom. She was instrumental in teaching her useful skills in how to get along in the world. Proverbs i: "Hear my child, your father's instruction, and do not reject your mother's teaching; for they are a fair garland for your head, and pendants for your neck." I shall always be grateful to Sharon for your mother's teaching. God's blessing on all your family. Ken
