Obituary For Shirley Rice Fredrickson

Shirley Fredrickson, resident of Grande Prairie, formerly of Beaverlodge and Bear Canyon, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at Grande Prairie, at the age of 82 years.

Shirley was born in London, England on June 10, 1934 to Harry and Blanche Rice. At the age of 15, Shirley, her mother and sister immigrated to Canada. Over the course of two marriages, Shirley raised seven children, all of whom still reside in Alberta and BC.

The majority of her adult life was spent on a farm in the Bear Canyon area. In 2005, Shirley and Charlie moved to Grande Prairie where she worked as a Museum Coordinator for Heritage Discovery Centre until her retirement in 2013.

Shirley was a very strong individual and conquered every challenge she took on, and she took on many. She was a strong community supporter and always helped anyone in need.

Shirley was surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and spending time with family was her greatest pleasure.

She will be sadly missed by her children: Dayle Backus, James (Roxie) Backus, Janet Friedel, David Backus, Joe Backus (Nancy Jensen), Cathy (Greg) Keown, and Michael (Jody) Fredrickson; grandchildren Ian, Dayna, Coleby, Dustin, Kris Wendy, Kevin, Dillon, Nicole, Alexis, and Ashtyn; great-grandchildren: Wyatt, Leah, Ethan, Isaac, Destiny, Kailyn, Makayla, Kyson, and Keegan.

She was predeceased by her husband Charlie Fredrickson, father Harry Rice, mother Blanche Walker, and sister Vida Clark.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017, at 10:00am, at Christ Church Anglican in Grande Prairie (6610 Poplar Dr.). Viewing will be held at 9:00am at Christ Church Anglican.

Interment will follow at Cherry Point Cemetery in Bear Canyon.

My thoughts and prayers are with Shirley's entire family. I clearly remember her job interview and the way she taught me that no matter what she could work with children, she could be a team player and she could be always positive. She got the job at Beaverlodge elementary school and she challenged us with her humour, her love of children and with her dedication to her job on a daily basis! She was energetic and so much fun to be around, truly young at heart. I cherish the time that I spent with her at school and all of the times I saw her later when I was greeted with a giggle, a smile, and a hug! Heaven has received a spunky, funny, positive, and precious angel in Shirley! Sincerely, Gena Jones
