Obituary For Sigmund Stanley Halwa

Sigmund Stanley Halwa, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at home, at the age of 86 years.

Sigmund was born November 25, 1931 into a family of 10 children. He graduated Grade 12 and went to NAIT as an electrician.

Dad was a logger, truck driver, grader operator, farmer, and electrician. He worked at North Star Oil, Midwest Electric, County of Grande Prairie, and then began a fulltime job building Country Roads RV Park. He married “Midge” on October 5, 1957. They celebrated 60 years of marriage last fall.

Dad’s faith was important to him. He loved the Lord and was faithful in his walk and leading his family. He taught us to pray as kids, he enjoyed visiting the priests and they were often in our home.

He never retired. The RV Park was his next dream and he still had visions and plans for it up until the time of his death. Hunting and fishing were his favourite hobbies. He loved picking berries: saskatoons, raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries; and loved playing cards: Bridge and Crib were his favourite. Family and friends were often playing cards over a visit. Dad loved the kids and always wanted to hold the babies.

Sigmund will be missed by his wife Joyce Halwa, whom he called “Midge”; children: Blake (Joanne) Halwa, Dana (Don) Bremner, Arlene Halwa, Cheryl Halwa, Darcy (Tracey) Halwa, Sig Jr. Halwa, Tracy (Rob) Pagacz, Susan (Rick) Fraser, Kim (Andrew) Diodoro, Keith (Yaritza) Halwa, Jason (Heather) Halwa, and Aaron (Marcia) Halwa; 37 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son Randy Halwa; parents Stanley and Adela Halwa; brothers: Ed Halwa, Maurice Halwa, and Gene Halwa; and sisters: Carole Bannister, Frances Cully, and Lucy Betts.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at 2:00pm, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Grande Prairie (10404 102 St.). Interment to follow at Grande Prairie Cemetery (84th Ave. & 112th St.). A luncheon will be held at Tranquille Hall at the church after the interment.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church (10404 102 St., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 2W3).

Dear Joyce & family. Our sincere sympathy on the loss of your dear husband, father, grandfather and friend. Though your hearts are hurting greatly, at this sad and difficult time, we know you also rejoice, that he is with our Lord, and "all is well with his soul". As we remember Sig, today, 1 Corinthians 13, (4-7) immediately comes to mind, and speaks for him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Joyce and all your family at this time. With love, Glen and Lenore Matcyk..

We had some great talks with Sig when Rob and him stayed with us for 2 nights. His commitment to and love of his family inspired us to become better parents and grandparents. His visions and beliefs on sustainable development and logging, protection of indigenous species and our obligation as human beings to leave the earth in a better state than we found it was very inspiring. In the short time that he passed through our lives, he left an indelible impression. He was a GREAT man! We are very sorry for your loss. He lives on in our memories.

Dear Joyce, I was saddened to hear of Sig's passing and I'm sorry that I couldn't attend the service. I was on my way to Winnipeg that day and have just recently returned. We know that your husband has gone to be with our Lord in his final resting place of peace and happiness.. Still there is a loneliness when our lifelong partner is no longer with us in person. May your faith and family presence bring you comfort going forward. Yours in sympathy, Sharon Lejeune
