Obituary For Stewart Plantinga

Stewart Plantinga, longtime resident of the Fourth Creek area, passed away on Friday, January 6, 2017 at the Central Peace Heath Complex in Spirit River, AB at the age of 83.

Stewart was born on July 31, 1933 at Neerlandia, AB. Stewart left the family farm in Neerlandia at a young age to run caterpillar, clearing land and working in logging camps. In 1954 he took up homestead land fifty miles north of Spirit River. In 1966 he married Doris Eben of Slave Lake. They spent a lifetime raising cattle and crops, along with some horses and the occasional goat and sheep. For many years Stewart also supplemented his farm income from his trap line along the Peace River. Stewart and Doris spent many happy years working hard together while enjoying the independent life of farming and caring for the land, animals and their children and grandchildren.

Stewart was actively involved in the local community representing both the R.E.A and Gas Co-Op. He was also a supporter of the Savanna Ag Society, coaching hockey and participating in the Volunteer Fire Department.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 40 years, Doris, who passed away in 2006. He is also predeceased by his parents Aebe and Minnie and brother Joseph (Joe).

He will be lovingly remembered by his son Daryll in Scotland (granddaughters Erin and Brenna); and his daughter Shirley in British Columbia (granddaughters Julia and Larissa). Stewart took great delight in his granddaughters and cherished them dearly.

He will be fondly remembered by his eight younger siblings: Annette, Gilles, Ella, Richard, Albert, Dora, Donald and Duane; their families and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family offers a special thank you to the staff and doctors at the Central Peace Health Care Centre who cared compassionately for Stewart during his time there.

Neighbours and friends from Fourth Creek, Silver Valley, Spirit River and surrounding area are invited to a Memorial Service on Friday, July 28, 2017, at 1:00pm, at the Savanna Rec Plex in Silver Valley, AB. Pastor Floyd Anderson officiating. Music by Sharilyn Anderson. Luncheon to follow catered by the Fourth Creek Community Club.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Praying for you

Our deepest sympathies to the family, especially Daryll and Shirley and their families. Stewart was one of those Fourth Creek pioneers who made the most of living in the Peace country, making farming work with ingenuity and persistance. I know he really enjoyed the Western Producers Olga brought to him in hospital so he could stay in touch with farming and their conversations about farming. He will be missed. I will miss your Dad! Our deepest condolences to you and your family! I have such fond memories at your farm every summer we visited, getting chased by roosters, playing kick the can with you and all the cousins, swimming in the dugouts, riding motorbikes and fun, loud dinners with all the cousins and Uncles/Aunties around together. Your Dad was always teasing me. My favourite memory is when he handed me a bridle and said I could go riding if I could catch a horse in the pasture. I spent hours trying, and behold, I did it. He and your Mom were always so welcoming, generous and kind! They both truly will be missed by the Plantinga clan!
