Obituary For Stuart William Shaune Shanks
Stuart William Shaune Shanks passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital after suffering from a long-term illness at the age of 54 years.
Stuart was born on April 9, 1970. To many in his early life, he was known as Shaune, and later in life, Stuart "Stu." He was raised on a farm from the age of eleven, and trained to become a Safety Technician after graduation.
Stuart lived his life thinking “Protect those that are weaker than you. Lift those that have fallen. Wrap your arms around those that need it.” He lived those words with every action he made. He was a tall sturdy man with the kindest heart, protected women who were homeless and gave his money to those that had less than him.
He loved his beloved cats - Quinn, Caramel, Creamsicle, and Patches with his whole heart. He was reliable and trustworthy. His heart of gold was evident in his support for women who had no safe place to live, giving them a home and food to eat. He was very creative and made custom T-shirts from the graphic designs he created.
His family and friends share in the sadness that his life was cut short and that he was full of unfulfilled dreams. His family loved him and will forever miss him.
He is survived by his father Wilson; older brother Kerry (Debrah Smeby); twin sisters Tracy and Theresa; aunts Betty and Darcie; cousins Lacey and Lazlo Jr.
Over the last few years, Stuart developed a close-knit group of friends that became extended family, confidants and support towards the end of his life. Thank you, Brenda Boyd and Nicole Soroka from Grande Prairie.
A Celebration of Life will be at a later date.

I am so glad he touched so many people's lives. The quote in the obituary was truly him. He never asked for help. He used to tease the crap out of me as a kid. His Scottish sarcasm was never ending. He was loved.

With a heavy heart and deep sadness we send our condolences and thoughts to Stuart's family. Many evenings were spent sitting in lounge chairs and chatting. Many times we can recall Stuart holding a different young lady's hands, so that they knew they were safe and could sleep. He was always willing to do even the littlest thing for someone no matter who they were. He had a genuine heart no matter who you were...and yet he wouldn't ask for even the smallest thing for himself unless it was important. He will always hold a special place in our hearts, he will dearly be missed by us all. Brenda & Derek
