Obituary For Talbert Velve
Talbert Velve, resident of Clairmont, AB, formerly of Valhalla Centre, AB, passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2019, at the QEII Hospital in Grande Prairie, AB, at the age of 89 years.
Talbert was born in Valhalla Centre, AB on April 25, 1930. He was the fifth of seven children born to Ole and Lilly Velve. He farmed the Velve homestead and, in 1970, married Inger Trostheim (nee Myhra).
There was nothing Talbert enjoyed more than reminiscing, visiting, and meeting new people. He could often be heard saying “I may not be a wealthy man, but I’m rich in friends.”.
Talbert was very proud of his grain farming. He was also a very skilled craftsman and found it rewarding to give back to the community. He helped build the Hythe Pioneer Home, Valhalla School, Valhalla Lutheran Church Parsonage as well as various other buildings.
Inger and Talbert sold the farm in 1987 and retired to Vernon, BC. They later lived in Pitt Meadows, BC until Inger’s passing in 2015 when Talbert decided to return to his roots and move back to the Peace Country Area.
In his early retirement, Talbert found himself putting his woodworking skills to work and he built many beautiful cedar hope chests, rocking horses, and garden displays that he sold at the weekly summer Farmer’s Market in Vernon. However, being the sentimental man that he was, most were given away to loved family members. These items have become very precious and cherished to those who received them.
He will be deeply missed by his three children: Shirley (David) Christie, Donnie (Lynn) Trostheim, and Rene (Kristian) Koerner; grandchildren: Clayton (Courtney) Christie, Jay (Pamela) Christie, Ty Trostheim, Alex Trostheim, Kai Koerner, and Cole Koerner. He will also be missed by his cherished great-grandchildren: Clayton’s children: Payton, Lainey, and Karsyn Christie; and Jay Christie’s children: Addisyn, Damon, and Hannah Christie.
Talbert was predeceased by his wife Inger Velve in 2015 and parents Ole and Lilly Velve.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at 2:00pm, at Valhalla Lutheran Church (9802 100 Ave.).
Following the interment at Valhalla Cemetery, friends are invited to join the family in the church basement for a time of fellowship.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Valhalla Lutheran Church (Box 49, Valhalla Centre, AB, T0H 3M0), Valhalla Heritage Society (Box 52, Valhalla Centre, AB, T0H 3M0) or to Valhalla Cemetery (Box 21, Valhalla Centre, AB, T0H 3M0).

Gil and I wish to extend our sympathy to all family members in the passing of Talbert. Growing up in Valhalla, we had such close associations with the Velve family and others in the community. Those are rich memories for me. Our home on the farm was one of the many structures Talbert built. I remember he loved us kids and paid attention to us. We will be thinking of you today. Love from Gil and Darlene Hegel.
