Obituary For Theresa Elizabeth Reid
Theresa “Bette” Reid (nee McKenna), longtime resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at the age of 91 years.
Bette was born on June 3, 1930, in Montreal, QB. After surviving an unknown future, and at times desperate poverty during the Depression, her family moved to Collingwood, ON. At age 18, she met the love of her life, Henry Reid. They started dating and less than one year later they united in a marriage that would last over 60 years. Although Bette spent a few years as Matron for the Children’s Aid Society running a Receiving Home, she remained a wife, mother and homemaker most of her life. After Henry retired from the Ontario Provincial Police, they visited Alberta for a family wedding and fell in love with Grande Prairie. Returning to sell their home in Orillia, ON, they moved west in 1990, and settled in the Mountview area, creating a happy and loving home until illness separated them in 2012.
Bette was an avid crafter, passing on her knowledge of crocheting, knitting, embroidery, sewing and sketching to her daughters. One of her great joys in life was creating beautiful sweaters for her family, and when she needed a new outlet to knit for, she began attending Craft Sales all over the Peace Region.
Bette’s passing has created a void in the life of all those that knew her; most of all in the life of her primary caregiver, her cribbage partner and her daughter Sue Reid.
She will be sadly missed by her daughter Barbara Reid; her grandchildren Erica Steele (Ryan), Tyler Padley (Jamie), Amber Schratl (Stefan), Sarah Sather (Scott), and Nancy McKenzie (Josh); as well as 12 great-grandchildren.
Bette was predeceased by her husband Henry; daughter Heather Elaine; granddaughter Teresa Lynn (Terri); as well as all of her siblings, ending a generation of McKennas.
A Family Graveside Service will be held at the Grande Prairie Cemetery.

So sorry to hear about about your mom. She was well loved and cared for, especially by you. I am very thankful to have met her. I loved hearing all of her life stories. She tried teaching me how to crochet (I wasn't a very good at it). We watched so many old tv shows together. She was a special lady. Sending you lots of love and strength to you and your family. She will be missed.

Bette has a special place in many hearts as we loved our singing times together. She had an amazing memory of the words and melodies of many "oldie goldie" songs. Her gentle spirit of love was a testimony of a caring person. - Sylvia Advent, AHS Volunteer

Pauline Paradis - Pet Visitation Volunteer and AVA
Sue and family. I am so very sorry to hear of the passing of Bette. All the many hours of visiting with her were always a pleasure. I was one of the pet visiting volunteers and my dog Ava considered Bette one of the best double butt scratchers ever. She always found the best spots. Ava loved to visit with Sue or at the very least loved the doggie treats that could be found in Bette's room. Again my deepest sympathies to all the family. Bette will be missed. Pauline Paradis and AVA
