Obituary For Tracy Lara Horte Campbell

Tracy Lara Horte Campbell, formerly of Valhalla Centre, AB, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2020, at her home in Beaverlodge, AB, at the age of 49 years.

Tracy was born March 27, 1970 in Hythe, AB. She graduated from Beaverlodge Regional High School in 1988, then attended Grande Prairie Regional College, graduating with a diploma in power engineering. After meeting and marrying her husband Steven, she travelled and lived in a number of different countries before returning to Canada in 2008. Following in her mother’s footsteps, she then pursued a career in Nursing and worked at the Beaverlodge Hospital until shortly after her cancer diagnosis. She was recently studying the world of entomology.

Tracy loved nothing more than her family. She also had a vested interest in anthropology, paleontology and was thrilled to have the opportunity to work at the dig site at Pipestone Creek in the late 80’s. Her passions included painting, gardening and cooking. She was very involved in her community and was an active member of both the WI and Valhalla School Board. She volunteered her time to many organizations, whenever needed.

Tracy is survived by her husband Steven; sons Nickolos and Gunnar; step-sons Dalten and Daine; mother Eunice Horte; brothers Grant Horte (Lauri) and Shawn Horte (Rhonda); nieces Kirsten, Bailey, and Katlyn; nephews Graham and Bretton; and aunt Heather Mellon. She will be sorely missed by her family, friends, and neighbors.

Tracy was predeceased by her father Sheldon Horte, grandparents Harry (Lorna) Horte, and Paulina (Otto) Kauser; and numerous uncles and aunts.

Her Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, at 4:00pm, at Homestead Hall (RRd 95).

Institute Ode

A goodly thing it is to meet

In Friendship’s circle bright,

Where Nothing stains the pleasure sweet

Nor dims the radiant light.

No unkind words our lips shall pass,

No envy sour the mind,

But each shall seek the common weal,

The good of all mankind.

I am very sad to hear of Tracy's passing--I worked with her at Pipestone Creek back in the late 1980s, and she was a good friend then who I would correspond with for several years afterward. We used to work in the lab after the day of fieldwork and reassemble Pachyrhinosaurus skeletal elements. I know in the years later we went with Milt Wright, then of the Archaeological Survey of Alberta, up to the north of Fairview to take a secondary look at a site where the Peace River Biface cache (a collection of stone tools likely well over 10,000 years old) was found. Unfortunately, I lost contact with Tracy in the early 90s, as my career and life took me a long way from the Peace River country. I am glad to hear that she kept her interest in archaeology and history. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

I was sorry to hear of your loss, and spent the evening looking through some photos to find one with a picture of Tracy, Grant, Shawn, Wade, Dawn and myself as a baby. If you would like me to forward it to you I would be happy to share it on email or Facebook.

My love letter to Tracy. From the moment I met you, I knew you would be my life long friend. There was always something so awe-inspiring about you. Your smile. Your laugh. Your kindness. I had never met anyone quite like you. I loved how you'd hang out with your mom. I loved how you'd mother your boys. I loved how you'd make Steve laugh, Hoovie Girl! Most of all, I love how beautiful and intelligent you are. I'm sure you're soaring fast now, making all the angels laugh and swooping down, and when you do, you will see all the people you've touched in your life, if only for a moment. I know all your hopes and dreams for your family will come true. I love you.
