Obituary For Victor Kowalchuk
With saddened hearts we announce the passing of Victor Kowalchuk. Victor, a life-long resident of the Spirit River area, passed away suddenly April 11, 2016 at the Central Peace Health Complex at the age of 84 years.
He was a loving and caring husband and family man and his keen sense of humour and stories will be missed by family and friends alike.
He was born October 11, 1931, the youngest son of Michael and Katherine Kowalchuk. He attended Ksituan School, finishing grade 8 at which time he entered the workforce and helped on the farm.
In 1955 Victor married Jean Smakula of Rycroft, the new Ksituan school teacher. In 1957 they bought the family farm where they lived for many years. While he continued to farm he worked at local sawmills, construction sites, and was employed during the building of the Proctor and Gamble Mill south of Grande Prairie and driving bus transporting workers at Syncrude in Fort McMurray while it was being constructed. He also drove the local school bus for Spirit River School Division for 13 years.
In 1976 Victor and Jean opened V & J Small Engine Repair in Spirit River which they successfully operated for 27 years. In 2002 they moved to Spirit River, first to a house, then to their condo at Grandview Estates. Victor’s health deteriorated and he entered the hospital in 2014 where he spent 2 years and 1 day there before his passing.
Victor is survived by Jean, his loving wife of nearly 61 years; children: David, Karen (Bill), Kim (Joe) and Greg (Janette); grandchildren: Christopher (Kerrie), Adam (Mareike), Randy, Adrionna and Paul; step-grandchildren: Nick and Ange; great-grandchildren: Jessica, Seianna, Jaden and Gage. He is also survived by his sister Frances and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Victor was predeceased by his infant daughter Mary, parents Michael and Katherine Kowalchuk, brother John Kowalchuk and infant sister Mary Kowalchuk.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and other staff at the Central Peace Health Complex for the care and attention they gave Victor during his stay at the hospital.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, April 18, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Spirit River (5019-43 Ave). Private family interment at a later date.
Memorial donations, greatly appreciated by the family, may be made to Central Peace Health Complex Auxiliary Club (P.O. Box 339, Spirit River, AB, T0H 3G0).
