Obituary For Violet Dorothy Dryer

Violet Dorothy Dryer (nee Remnant), passed away on Friday, August 27, 2021, at the age of 95 years.

Violet was born on April 15, 1926, in Rowledge, Farnham, England. She met her future husband, Arnold Dryer, at a dance in the village hall in 1943. Arnold was stationed nearby at a Canadian Army Base in Aldershot. After the squadron (South Alberta Regiment) was moved, the two wrote letters to one another for the duration of the war. At 18, Violet joined the W.A.A.F, working as a clerk in R.A.F. records. Violet and Arnold were married on August 23, 1945. Arnold returned to Canada and Violet waited for permission from the Canadian Wives Bureau to join him. In June of 1946, she sailed on the Aquitania arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax, NS. From there, Violet travelled to Grande Prairie, AB, by train, arriving on July 4th.

Violet and Arnold farmed in the Hermit Lake area west of Grande Prairie until they moved to Grande Prairie in 1974. Arnold passed away in 1977.

Violet worked for many years in the Grande Prairie Co-op cafeteria. She enjoyed her years on the farm and always had a large garden. Violet also enjoyed travelling and made numerous trips to the U.K as well as parts of Canada, Europe and the U.S. She attended several War Bride reunions, one of which was a cruise on the Queen Mary 2 from New York City to South Hampton. Another memorable trip was a battlefield tour with the South Alberta Regiment Veterans Association.

Violet was a Royal Canadian Legion Life Member and a member of the Alberta War Brides Association.

Violet was a kind and gentle person who will be lovingly remembered by her sons Dale Dryer, and Mark Dryer; daughter Anne (Bill) Shumard; grandchildren Ryan Shumard (Carla), Brenda Dryer (Chad), Meaghan (Christiaan) Doyle, Jody Dryer, Jenny (Mike) Kinney, Erin (Chris) O’Rielly, Michael Dryer, and Alan (Alex) Shumard; 18 great-grandchildren; 2 great great-grandchildren; as well as numerous extended family members.

Violet was predeceased by her husband Arnold, parents Fred and Florence Remnant, brother Fred, sister Winnie Kennedy, daughter in-law Donna Peppard, as well as niece Linda Valin.

A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, September 2, 2021, at 1:00pm, at the Grande Prairie Cemetery (84 Ave and 122 St).

Following the service, friends are invited to join the family for a luncheon at the Grande Prairie Royal Canadian Legion (9912 101 Ave.).

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #54 (9912 101 Ave, Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 0X8).

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Mackenzie Place Continuing Care Centre 2 East.
