Obituary For William "Dan" Shyiak

Dad passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at the QEII Hospital in Grande Prairie.

He was born November 30, 1932, in Elton, MB.

Dad will be fondly remembered by his family as a gas fitter, steamfitter, plumber, and a “jack of all trades”. He could fix anything that needed fixing. He excelled in all the things he was involved in, whether it was baseball, curling or golfing, and was a 'dead eye and a crack shot' when it came to his hunting skills! Dad was musical and could play many instruments by ear. He always enjoyed playing a mean game of crib, and happy to be the first to peg out.

In 1957, his career in the natural gas industry began in Portage la Prairie, eventually moving his family to B.C. and Alberta. The family moved to Grande Prairie in 1968 with Dad working for Northland Utilities. Dad was respected and remembered by many of his co-workers that worked with him during those years.

Upon leaving Grande Prairie, Dad continued with his work in several areas throughout Alberta. Retirement took him to Brooks to be with his Mom, brother Ron and sister Louise. This was a special time for all of them, as they were reunited. In 2012, Dad moved back to Grande Prairie to be closer to his daughters and their families. He lived in Aurora Court and then Pioneer Lodge.

Dad is survived by his children: Debbie, Valerie (Bill), Wendy (Brian), Nola (Kevin), Jennifer and Joshua; grandchildren: Justin, Jessica, Lauren, Bryce and Carly; great-grandchildren: Madison, Kaitlyn, and Alexander. He is also survived by brother Murray (Ella) and sister Louise (Keith), nieces and nephews and extended family.

Dad was predeceased by his parents Anne and John, brother Ron and sister Elsie.

The family would like to thank the staff, residents and Home Care at the Lodge for their kindness and friendship to Dad. We are also grateful to the Doctors and nursing staff of 5North that cared for him.

At Dad's request, there will not be a service, but an interment at a later time at the Hillside Cemetery in Portage la Prairie.

Donations in Dad’s memory may be made to Seniors Outreach (#102 9905 101 Ave, Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 0X7).
