A Life of Kindness and Quiet Strength: William Dean Barkwell

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of William Dean Barkwell, a beloved companion to Janice M. Fleming, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Dean left this world on Monday, November 25, 2024, at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, at the age of 80. His unwavering kindness, humour, and steadfast love will be treasured by all who were fortunate to know him.

Born on March 24, 1944, in Winnipeg, MB and raised in Flin Flon, MB, Dean was a man of quiet strength and integrity, whose greatest joy came from his community and the relationships he nurtured. Growing up with a deep appreciation for hard work, routine, nature, and the bonds of friendship, he spent his life cultivating connections, always ready with a helping hand and a warm smile.

In 1966 at the age of 22, Dean moved to Slave Lake, AB, where he began a remarkable 35-year career with Chevron. After his time with Chevron, he worked for Duane Lund and Dan Manka before retiring his coveralls. Dean’s dedication, work ethic and commitment to his colleagues were hallmarks of his professional life, leaving a lasting impression on all who worked alongside him.

Dean’s life was rich with activity, connection, and his love for Slave Lake. He maintained a dedicated routine, walking at the MRC track, attending aquacise classes, and coffee meetups and enjoying the camaraderie at the “Safety Meetings” in Mitsue, AB. He found joy in fishing trips with friends, walks along Devonshire Beach, swimming, and campouts at the Assineau campground with Janice and family. Road trips and travel either solo or with friends added a sense of adventure to his life.

Dean is survived by his brother Ron (Marilyn) Barkwell; niece J. Allison Barkwell, nephew James Barkwell, his (step)children Tracy (Kelly), David, Angela (Michael), and Katherine (Jason); his grandchildren Tyler (Layna), Robyn (Morgan), Mackenzie (Darian), Madison, Kennedy, Kellen, Kayty, and Evan; his brothers-in-law Ken (Tracey) and, Bill (Deb); his sisters-in-law Susan (Gerry), Nancy (Orin), and Carol (Blaine); and a circle of nieces, nephews, amazing neighbours and friends, who will miss him dearly. His loving feline companions, Pumpkin and Tom, also brought him immense joy and comfort in his later years; Dean embraced his role as a (step)father and Grandpa with open arms, sharing his wisdom, compassion, and unwavering support.

Dean was predeceased by his parents, John and Olive Barkwell who he shared many childhood stories of love and respect; his beloved “fiancée” of over 30 years Janice Marie Fleming; his dear friends that became family, Dave and June Carpenter, brother-in-law Orin Sand; and sister-in-law Kathy Carpenter.

A Celebration of Dean’s life will be held in May 2025.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Dean and Janice’s name to the Slave Lake Animal Rescue Society, honouring the love for their cats and his spirit of giving.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dan Manka, Lisa Lukan, Joe & Francis Winkler, Bertha (Twin) L’Hirondelle, Alvin Anderson, Jon Ord, Bob Montey, and the many others who visited, called, and supported Dean and his loved ones during his final weeks. A special thank-you also goes to the two flight paramedics who stood by Dean’s side, exemplifying the true spirit of health”care”.

Dean’s generosity and care touched everyone around him, leaving a legacy of kindness through the countless memories he created. In his final days, Dean shared a piece of wisdom that perfectly encapsulates his outlook on life: “We have to be grateful for all of the gifts life gives us.” Today, and always, we are profoundly grateful that life graced us with (William) Dean Barkwell.
