Obituary For William George Zahara

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of William George Zahara. William was a resident of Grande Prairie, formerly of Rycroft, and he passed away on Monday, June 24, 2019, at Prairie Lakes Seniors’ Community, at the age of 95 years.

Willie was born August 22, 1923 in Fort Frances, ON. He moved to Rycroft as a young child and grew up on the farm two miles south of Rycroft. He married Della Craig on December 18, 1948. They raised their five children on the farm before retiring to Rycroft in 1990.

Willie was active as a young man and especially enjoyed playing ball. He continued with his love of sports by coaching his own boys and watching his grandchildren play ball and hockey. He was very active in the Merry Pioneers. He loved playing crib and won many prizes doing so with Anne Kotyk in the Seniors Games and Rycroft Frolic.

He worked towards making Rycroft a better community by volunteering on many boards and groups.

Willie moved to Pleasantview Lodge in November, 2009 and then to Prairie Lakes Seniors’ Community in 2017.

He will be sadly missed by his children: Bob (Sandi), Marge (Mike) Collins, Peggy (Doug) Hollingworth, Jim (Julie), and Danny (Denise); grandchildren: Ryan (Cheryl), Blair (Leann), Amanda (Mike) Howrish, Craig, Kelly (Matt) Eskerod, Rory (Vion) Collins, Ian (Cyndi), Courtney Hollingworth, Kent (Janelle), Braydon (Jamie), Jace (Talisa) Zahara, Morgan (Heili), and Stefanie (Simon) Zahara; great-grandchildren: Devon and Daymond Zahara, Xavier Zahara, Sawyer and Walker Howrish, and Jasper and Kai Eskerod.

Willie was predeceased by his wife Della; sisters Lillian (John) Lazoruk and Mary (Joe) Basarab; brother Emil; and grandsons: Joel Zahara, Adam Hollingworth, and Eric Hollingworth.

Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 28, 2019 at 11:00am, at Rycroft Community Hall.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Sending condolences to your entire family. Your dad/grandpa always had a smile on his face and a word or two to say. He was a wonderful pillar of the community and such an advocate for sports.
